Box Score
Katie Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) scored late in the second half, but The College at Brockport women's soccer team would have to settle for a tie against Fredonia on Friday afternoon in the SUNYAC opener.
Both teams played strong high-pressure defense in the first half. The Blue Devils managed to hold the Golden Eagles to zero shots.
Fredonia scored nine minutes into the second half to end the shutout.
The Golden Eagles continued to struggle getting shots off, but Gildemeyer had the answer and tied up the game with just over five minutes left in regulation off of a pass from Courtney Szczesniak (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Szczesniak passed back to Gildemeyer outside the 18-yard box and Gildemeyer was able to chip the ball over the goalkeepers head.
In the first overtime, Szczesniak had the best chance to score, but the Fredonia goalkeeper made a great save. The Golden Eagle kept up pressuring offensively but could not finish.
The Blue Devils had control in the second overtime, nearly scoring on several occasions. The Brockport defense stood strong and was able to shut down the Fredonia pressure.
Penalty kicks were held as a SUNYAC tie breaker. Fredonia finished with a 2-1 advantage.
"I thought we played well on the road in our first SUNYAC game," said head coach Joan Schockow. "We battled back to tie the score and I thought we outplayed them in overtime with a few scoring chances but just couldn't put it away."
Brockport returns to action on the road again Saturday for another SUNYAC matchup at 1:00 pm against Buffalo State.
