Ivy Nets 35 as Brockport Outlasts Buffalo State

The Golden Eagles pulled away from Buffalo State with a 84-69 victory Tuesday night

John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) tied a career-high with 35 points as The College at Brockport men's basketball team, ranked #23 by d3hoops.com, defeated Buffalo State 84-69 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Tuesday night in Brockport.

Buffalo State (7-8, 3-4 SUNYAC) opened up the game quickly, going on a 10-2 run. The Bengals pushed the ball and their strategy helped them keep the lead for the first 10 minutes of the half.

Brockport (12-1, 6-0 SUNYAC) stayed poised and slowly chipped away at the Bengals lead. At 9:58, Ivy hit two free throws to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the night, a lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

A jumper by Ivy at 6:36 started the Golden Eagles on an 8-0 run as Brockport took a nine point lead.

At 2:48, Ivy drained a three to put Brockport up by 10, their largest lead of the half. Ivy hit another three with 54 seconds on the clock, giving the Golden Eagles a seven point lead to take into halftime.

Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) started the second half off for the Golden Eagles with a layup off of a Dorian Hayden (East Northport, NY/Northport)steal on the other end of the court.

A free throw from the Bengals cut the Brockport lead to six at 17:15, but Brockport answered back with an Ivy bucket and a layup from Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearny) to go back up by 10.

With 6:55 left in the game the Bengals knocked down a shot, cutting Brockport's lead to just four points, but that was the closest that Buffalo State would get.

Ivy scored 11 points in the final six points of the game, helping Brockport seal the victory. Ivy was 5-for-5 from the free throw line in the final minute of play.

As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 44.6% from the floor, only 16.7% from long range and a strong 85.2% from the free throw line.

Ivy led scoring with 35 points, going 9-for-9 from the free throw line and pulling down six rebounds. Caruthers finished the game with 13 points and four assists, while Coyle added 12 points and tallied a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) recorded eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists, while senior Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) registered a team high six steals.

Brockport returns to action on Friday night as the Golden Eagles travel to take on Oneonta in a SUNYAC matchup at 8 pm.
