Freshman Faith Welch (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) scored 18 points, but The College at Brockport dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup against Buffalo State 68-52 on Tuesday evening in Brockport, NY.
Brockport (6-7, 2-4 SUNYAC) and Buffalo State (11-3, 61) kept the game close in the first half.
Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) made a layup to get the Golden Eagles on the board first at 18:43.
Both teams traded the lead back and forth for the next five minutes. Brockport took a five point lead, their largest of the game, as Hannah Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, NY/Sacred Heart) sunk a three pointer at 10:37.
Buffalo State followed up with a 9-0 run to take back the lead and go up by four points at 7:37.
In the final minutes of the half, both teams battled for the lead. A quick shot by the Bengals with two seconds left in the half put Buffalo State up 31-26 heading into halftime.
Welch opened up the second half with a long range three to cut the Bengals lead to two points. Despite battling for the opening minutes, Buffalo State managed to keep the lead.
At 16:23, the Bengals started a 10-0 run that helped them seal control of the game.
With 8:40 to play, the Bengals pushed their lead out to 15 points, their largest of the game at that point.
The Golden Eagles struggled to contain Buffalo State on offense as time ran down. With 36 seconds to play, Buffalo State hit a three to give them their largest lead of the game, 19.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 40.9% from the floor, 37.5% from long range and 76.5% from the free throw line.
Welch led scoring with 18, while Hannalee Fordyce (Amityville, NY/Copiague) added 10 and Marshall chipped in eight points. Marshall also pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
Brockport returns to action on Friday night as the Golden Eagles travel to take on Oneonta in a SUNYAC matchup at 6 pm.
