Box Score Junior Kayla Barber (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) led The College at Brockport Volleyball team with 16 kills on the way to a 3-2 non-conference match win against Nazareth on the Golden Eagles campus Tuesday evening.
Brockport jumped out to an early lead winning the first two sets of the match 25-13 and 25-21. Nazareth fought valiantly to even the match score at 2-2, with a 25-20 third set win and a 25-21 fourth set win. However the Golden Flyers attempts proved futile as Brockport won the fifth set 15-11 to close out the match win.
The first set was dominated by Golden Eagle freshmen Brianna Richardson (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), Emily Flohr (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Noelle Poloncarz (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). Richardson tallied two blocked shots and two kills while Flohr and Polloncarz totaled four service aces combined.
In the second set, Barber took control of the offensive attack. She totaled seven of her kills in the second set and also added one of her three blocked shots. Richardson and Flohr combined to score five points through kills. Flohr also added two more service aces to her total of four.
The next two sets Brockport traded leads with Nazareth, going back and forth before the Golden Flyers emerged victorious.
In the fifth and final set, Barber, Richardson and Flohr yet again led the charge. During a five-point rally by Brockport Richardson blocked a bullet of a shot from a Golden Flyer and Flohr added a point when she hit a laser of a shot for a kill. After Richardson's block, Brockport never gave the lead back to Nazareth.
On the match four Golden Eagles tallied double digit kills, including Barber with 16, Richardson and junior Ashley Capone (Lowville, NY/Lowville) with 11 and Flohr with 10. Richardson and Capone each led the team with a 0.364 hitting percentage, while only committing three errors apiece. Poloncarz put the ball in prime spots for her Golden Eagle teammates to flourish and finished with 48 assists.
Senior Jaime Snyder (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) and Flohr saved many points from happening with their 25 digs combined. Barber and Richardson each blocked three shots over the five set match.
Brockport's regular season finale and senior night is a 6 pm match Oct. 31 at Brockport in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles secured the #4 seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament and will face Oswego Nov. 7 at 6 pm in New Paltz.
