Box Score The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team took an early lead and then in the second half scored to tie the game at 2-2 but a late penalty kick converted by Oneonta was the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Red Dragons Friday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport.
Brockport (5-1-4 Overall, 1-1-1 SUNYAC), ranked #25 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll, lost for the first time this season snapping a 13-game regular season unbeaten streak dating back to 2013.
The Golden Eagles took an early lead as Collin Goettel (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) scored on a set piece with a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Two Golden Eagles ran through the ball before Goettel fired a hard low shot past the Oneonta goalkeeper for the 1-0 Brockport lead in the 23rd minute.
Oneonta (8-0-2, 2-0-1), ranked #5 in the national poll, tied the game 13 minutes later taking advantage of a Brockport turnover at the top of the box. A quick kick off the change of possession caught Brockport keeper Casey Sullivan (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) off guard and the teams went into the halftime intermission tied at 1-1.
In the second half, Oneonta took a 2-1 lead with a run down the left side of the field past two Brockport defenders and into the box. A low shot into the corner of the goal gave the Red Dragons the lead just three minutes into the period.
In the 57th minute with Brockport applying pressure, the Golden Eagles tied the score off a corner kick. Goettel lined up the kick and lofted a ball to the far post just over the head of Peter DiLorenzo (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) and onto the foot of Nick Cafarelli (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) who redirected the ball into the back of the goal.
The score remained tied until late in the second half when Oneonta moved into the Brockport zone after a turnover sending a ball into the 18-yard box. The referee ruled a hand ball on the Brockport defender resulting in a penalty kick with 3:38 remaining in the half. Oneonta scored with a shot to the lower right corner of the goal for the 3-2 lead.
Brockport had a couple late runs up the field but neither results in a shot on goal as time expired.
