Volleyball Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals

Brockport defeats Oswego 3-2 to advance in SUNYAC Tournament

The College at Brockport Volleyball team advanced to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals with an exhilarating 3-2 victory over Oswego Friday night in New Paltz. Freshman setter Noelle Poloncarz (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) led a well balanced Golden Eagle offense with 50 assists in its first SUNYAC Tournament appearance since 2009.

Brockport dominated the first set with a 25-10 win. In set two, the Lakers rallied to take a late lead and won 26-24. Brockport again dominated the action scoring a 25-16 third set victory. However the Lakers would not give up without a fight and used a late fourth set rally to win 25-23. In the fifth and deciding set the Golden Eagles used seven kills to close out the Lakers with a 15-9 win.

Freshman Emily Flohr (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was a major reason Brockport dominated the first set. She finished the set with four kills and two service aces. Junior Kayla Barber (South Glens Falls, NY/ South Glens Falls) also contributed four kills, including the final two of the set.

In the second set, Brockport finished with an incredible 17 kills and two service aces. However the Golden Eagles were unable to secure the win as Oswego went on a 9-2 run to close out the 26-24 win.

Brockport utilized a string of five straight points scored by Flohr and Barber in the third set to take a 16-9 lead. Flohr scored Brockport's 24th point of the set before Oswego was able to score three straight points to postpone the loss, but succumbed to the Golden Eagles 25-16.

The Golden Eagles and Lakers traded leads throughout the fourth set. Brockport held a 21-17 advantage, but Oswego rallied to score eight of the next 10 points.

Freshman Brianna Richardson (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored the first point for Brockport with a kill, as the Golden Eagles took the lead from the start and never gave it back. Every time Oswego made a run in an attempt to tie the score a different Golden Eagle responded. Barber helped Brockport maintain the comfortable lead with three kills after Oswego rallied to cut the lead to 7-5. After another three point rally by Oswego, Brockport junior Ashley Capone (Lowville, NY/Lowville) responded with a series of kills putting Brockport on the brink of advancing to the semifinals. After an attacking error by Brockport, Oswego was unable to get the serve over the net. Brockport advanced on the service error.

On the match, Brockport was led by Barber with 19 kills, Flohr finished with 12 while Capone and Richardson each registered nine. Richardson and Capone both finished the match with only one attacking error. Flohr led all Golden Eagles with four service aces.

On the defensive side five different Golden Eagles contributed double digit digs including senior Jaime Snyder (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) with 29, Flohr with 23, Barber with 21, freshman Aimee Spilman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) with 15 and Poloncarz with 12.

With the win Brockport advances to face SUNYAC Tournament host and #1 seed New Paltz in a 6 pm semifinal matchup tomorrow.
