Senior Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) scored 21 points, but it was not enough at The College at Brockport men's basketball team was upset 95-83 by Oswego in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on the road Tuesday night.
Despite starting the game off on a 12-3 run, Brockport (20-3,14-2 SUNYAC) found itself down 36-47 at halftime.
Oswego (15-9, 9-8 SUNYAC) slowly chipped away at the Golden Eagle lead throughout much of the first half. The Lakers gained their first lead with 6:35 left to play, going up by two points. In the final minutes of the half, Oswego hit some big shots to slowly gain control.
Brockport uncharacteristically hit zero three pointers in the first half, while Oswego was nearly 50% from long range.
The Golden Eagles continued to struggle with the three point shot in the second half and never managed to even tie the game up as the Lakers managed to hang onto the lead throughout the rest of the game.
Brockport cut the Oswego lead to six a few times, but it was the closest they would get to the Lakers. Each time the Golden Eagles would start to make a run, Oswego answered back to push out their lead again.
In the final minute of play, the Lakers shot well from the free throw line to seal their win.
As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 45.1% (32-71) from the floor, 18.2% (2-11) and 77.3% (17-22) from the free throw line. Â
Four different Golden Eagles scored double-digits. Caruthers led the offense with 21 points and four steals. Olusola Adeniran (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) added 16 points, while John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) chipped in 15 and Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) had 11. Ivy and Lyerly each pulled down five rebounds.
Brockport returns to action on Friday night at 6pm for a home SUNYAC matchup against New Paltz.
