The Stadium Complex - Cortland, NY
Â
The College at Brockport Football team hits the road for the first time in 2014 with the annual tilt with Cortland at 12 pm Saturday in Cortland. Brockport comes in with a 1-0 record and an eight-game win streak after defeating Oberlin 45-10 in the opening weekend of the season. Cortland enters its home opener with a 0-1 record after dropping a 51-48 overtime loss at Buffalo State.
On a Roll: Brockport: The eight-game win streak is the second longest in school history with the school record standing at a 12-game streak that started at the end of the 1999 season and continued with the first eight wins in 2000. During that 12-game streak, the Golden Eagles beat Cortland twice. The first was a 28-24 win over the Red Dragons in Brockport on the final game of the 1999 season. The second was a season-opening 14-0 win in Cortland the following year.
In and Out of the Polls: Brockport found a spot in the D3Football.com Top-25 for week one as one of the teams in the also receiving votes section of the poll. Cortland was receiving votes in the preseason poll but after the overtime loss to Buffalo State in week one, dropped from poll.
Streak Talk: Brockport has had four long win streaks since the record setting streak in 1999-2000. In 2001, the Golden Eagles won seven straight games until losing to Rowan in the NCAA Playoffs. In 2002, the team won another seven straight during the middle of the season. Brockport rebounded from the loss that ended the streak to win three straight including two in the NCAA Playoffs. In 2003, a six-game win streak started the season and a 28-14 win over the Red Dragons started the streak and the season.
Coaches: Brockport Head Coach Jason Mangone starts his second season at the helm after establishing the best first-year coaching season record in Brockport history with the 8-3 record. Dan MacNeill is in his 18th season at Cortland and has a 114-62 record with 12 postseason appearances. He is the all-time wins and winning percentage leader for football coaches at Cortland.
Who's the QB: Brockport had four different players lineup to take snaps in the quarterback position in the week one win over Oberlin. Wayne Bonsell started the game and guided the Golden Eagles for the first three possessions of the game. In the second quarter, Ty Stoldt came in at quarterback and guided the offense to a pair of touchdowns. Also in the second quarter, fullback Shireem Cobb lined up to take the snap in a wildcat formation. It was his first of two attempts in the wildcat but both were interrupted by Brockport penalties. In the fourth quarter, sophomore Mike Torrillo came in to lead the final Brockport drive of the game.
Catching Fire: Brockport wide receiver Eric Malave not only moved into the #1 uniform number held previously by record-setting wide receiver Jake Spalik, but also passed one of Spalik's records in the first game with the new jersey. Malave caught nine passes in the first half and on the third possession of the third quarter; he caught four more passes to break the school record for receptions in a game held by Spalik.
Scoring in Bunches: Since now Head Coach Jason Mangone took over the reins of the Brockport offense in 2003, the Golden Eagles have scored nearly 3,200 points over the 114 games for an average of 28.0 points per game. The high-flying offense hit the 40-point mark for the 30th time since 2003 with the 45-point performance against Oberlin. The Golden Eagles have suffered just two shutout losses since 2003 – one to Rowan in 2005 and once to Cortland in 2010. The 35-0 loss at Cortland was the last time Brockport failed to score in a game.
Over 400 yards = a Win: The high powered Golden Eagle offense surpassed the 500-yard mark in total offense in the win over Oberlin racking up 528 yards. Since the start of the 2013 season, Brockport has cleared the 400-yard mark in total offense seven times and are 6-1 in those games. The high mark for total offense during the stretch was 668 yards in the win over William Paterson October 12 of last year.
Dominating Defense: The Brockport defense has been stifling over the past six games surrendering just 65 points since October 26 of last year for an average of just 10.8 points per game. Over the past 10 years, however, the Red Dragons have averaged 35.1 points per game against the Brockport defense.
Mangone against the Dragons: In his first attempt against Cortland as a head coach, Jason Mangone posted a 49-32 win. The win stopped a streak of five straight Cortland wins in the series. Mangone has an overall winning record against the Red Dragons winning both matchups with Cortland as the starting quarterback in 1997 and 1998 and posting six wins as an assistant coach. Overall, he has a personal 9-8 record against Cortland.
Next up for Brockport: The Golden Eagles return home next weekend for what is expected to be the most attended game in school history with the combination of Homecoming and Courage Bowl X against cross-town rival St. John Fisher. The 6 pm game will be televised live on Time Warner cable across the State and a crowd of nearly 10,000 fans is expected. The proceeds from the game will benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times and marks the first appearance for the Golden Eagles in the Courage Bowl.
