Box Score Sophomore kicker Tyler Perna (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) has been named ECAC Division III-Northwest and Empire 8 Football Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking the game-winning field goal against Cortland this past weekend. Perna kicked the 19-yard field goal through the uprights giving The College at Brockport Football team the 17-14 win. Freshman Nate Wilkinson (Elba, NY/Iroquois) also earned ECAC Division III-Northwest Rookie of the week for scoring both of Brockport's touchdowns in the win over Cortland. Wilkinson had 10 catches for 131 yards and his one-handed catch in the rain was a finalist for National Play of the Week.
Perna rallied from two missed field goals earlier in the game with the fourth quarter of his life. After a drive stalled for the Golden Eagles, Perna nailed the 19-yarder with a little more than two minutes remaining.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Red Dragons return man looked to be on his way to a touchdown if he could just elude one more player. That player happened to be Perna and he was determined to keep his field goal as the deciding factor. He threw himself at the legs of the return man and took him down after a 41-yard return into Brockport territory.
After Cortland drove the ball to the one-yard line through a series of run plays and an 18-yard completion they were whistled for a false start. With only three seconds remaining on the clock and a 10 second run off being part of the penalty, the Golden Eagles and Perna escaped Cortland's home opening game of the season with a victory.
The Golden Eagles return to action this week for Brockport's Homecoming Weekend. They will face St. John Fisher at 6 pm Saturday in Courage Bowl X, the annual football game that raises money for children dealing with cancer or some other serious illness. All proceeds from the game will be donated to Camp Good Days and Special Times. To purchase tickets for this game and help a great cause go to: www.BrockportTickets.com.
