Box Score Sophomore Faith Welch (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) had a strong game for the The College at Brockport as they dropped a 77-64 decision against New Paltz in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on the road Friday night.
Brockport shot 40% from the field while holding New Paltz to 38% on the floor. However the Hawks made 10 three pointers to Brockport's five from beyond the arc.
The Golden Eagles had the lead for the first three minutes of the game as junior guard Marissa Pike (Burdett, NY/Watkins Glen) nailed a jump shot less than 20 seconds into the game. Freshman guard Alyssa Rusinko (Fairport, NY/Fairport) added four points with a jump shot and two free throws. New Paltz took the lead at the 17 minute mark and took a 38-32 lead to half time.
In the second half, quick passing helped the Hawks take a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. Welch helped cut the deficit to six points, New Paltz's smallest lead of the half, with a three pointer three minutes into the half. The Hawks responded with an 11-0 run to take a 17 point lead.
Pike made a three pointer with 11 minutes remaining before more than two minutes of no scoring for either team. Rusinko hit another triple for the Golden Eagles to trim the Hawks lead to 54-43.
Junior forward Olivia Suhr (Rochester, NY/Marion) led the Brockport offense with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Pike finished the game with 14 points, while Welch added 11 points and a team high four assists. Rusinko chipped in eight points and three assists on the night.
The Golden Eagles will face Oneonta tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm in Oneonta.
