Box Score Brockport, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team dropped a tough overtime contest to Utica College on Saturday, 22-19.
The Golden Eagles fall to 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in Empire 8 play, while the Pioneers improve to a 4-2 mark with a 3-1 record within the league.
The Green and Gold offense got off to a hot start when
Dan Andrews sparked the drive with a 38-yard run down to the Utica five-yard line. Andrews rushed four consecutive times plowing his way into the end zone on the fourth-and-goal play from the one-yard line to put the Golden Eagles ahead 7-0 after a
Tyler Perna Extra point.
The two teams battled, with neither able to make it into the red-zone until the 12:07 mark in the second quarter when a 37-yard Utica field goal pulled the Pioneers within four, at 7-3.
On the succeeding Brockport drive,
Dan Andrews picked up significant yards when he shook a handful of Utica defenders and connected with a
Wayne Bonsell pass for a 52-yard pick up, taking them into Utica territory. The Golden Eagles were knocking on the door, but on a fourth-and-two, couldn't convert to turn the ball over on downs.
Brockport brought a slim one-point lead into the break after the Pioneers closed the half with a 30-yard field goal.
The second half got off to an eerily similar start as the first for the Golden Eagles that saw a second Andrews TD. Following a
Jerry Thompson catch for a first down, Andrews took the handoff from Bonsell, rushing through the gap created by the Golden Eagle linemen. Andrews beat the lone safety to the end zone for a 47-yard touchdown, and after a missed extra point, the Golden Eagles held on to a 13-6 lead.
In the same quarter, a nine play, 71-yard drive from the Pioneers resulted in a touchdown that would knot the game at 13-13 after the extra point with 9:04 to play. On the next Utica drive, the Golden Eagles held the Pioneers to a field goal, and a 44-yard attempt was good, giving Utica its first lead of the ball game at 16-13.
In the final quarter of regulation head coach
Jason Mangone's squad went straight to work, propelled by Andrews. The junior started the drive with a 34-yard pickup, followed by a 12-yard rush to the Utica 38-yard line. After picking up three first downs, Andrews made his way into the end zone for his third score on the day, and regained the lead at 19-16 after a two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
On the successive drive, the Green and Gold defense came up big, when
Julius Brunson picked off a Utica pass at the Utica 43-yard line with 5:30 to play in the quarter. The Brockport offense worked down to the Utica 11, but an untimely Bonsell interception gave the Pioneers the ball back with 1:55 on the clock.
Utica drove down the field to Brockport's 19-yard line, working to get within field goal range. The Pioneers initially sent the offensive unit on to the field with seven seconds to play, but a Brockport timeout gave Utica second-thoughts about the win-or-go home mentality and chose to kick the game-tying field goal to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Golden Eagles started with possession, and the Brockport offense was unable to secure the first down. A Utica field goal on the following possession put the final stamp on the contest as Brockport fell, 22-19.
Andrews had a night for the Golden Eagles, posting 256 rushing yards and 52 receiving yards for 308-yards of total offense. The junior posted three touchdowns, with an average rush of 7.5-yards a carry. Bonsell picked up 196 yards on 14 completions. Thompson was his top target, with five catches for 44-yards.
On the defensive side,
Alex Egglinger led the way with 16 tackles and a tackle for a loss of one yard.
Jake O'Connell picked up 10 tackles, with
Julius Brunson and
Nathaniel Keith III each adding nine tackles.
