CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team emerged the victors with a 1-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win Friday afternoon against Cortland in a rematch of last season's SUNYAC Semifinal which was also played on the home field of the Red Dragons.
Brockport (9-2-2 Overall, 3-1-2 SUNYAC) played a superb game defensively, allowing only a single shot on net.
Reigning Brockport Athlete of the Week and SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week Casey Sullivan proved up to the task in making that lone save to secure his third straight shutout and ninth of the season.
The Golden Eagles defensive efforts were exceptional on the day noted head coach Gary LaPietra. Patrick Sprague, David Rougeux and Peter DiLorenzo put heavy amounts of pressure on the Red Dragon defense while David LaPietra played tremendously for the Green and Gold defensively in the middle of the field.
Cortland's goalkeeper would not budge for most of the game but wound up on the losing end when Collin Goettel lined up for a corner kick. The senior midfielder played a whipping ball into the near post and it was deflected into the backend of the net by a Red Dragon defender for the lone score of the game.
With the win, Brockport improved its SUNYAC standings and currently sits in third place with 11 total conference points behind only Oneonta and Plattsburgh.
The Green and Gold stay on the road Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Oswego for another crucial chance to earn conference points and improve its position in the SUNYAC standings.
