BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team is gearing up to take on Empire 8 leaders SUNY Cortland in this week's matchup.
The Golden Eagles are coming off an exciting 27-17 win over the then No. 24 ranked Ithaca College. Head coach
Jason Mangone's squad pieced together top-notch offensive and defensive performances to bring home the win.
Senior quarterback
Wayne Bonsell's performance was strong enough to earn him the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week. The Binghamton, N.Y. native threw 16 completions for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Bonsell directed an offense that posted three second-half scores to secure the big win.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Austin Dean earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week. The first-year was a part of a strong defensive unit that was key in the victory. Dean picked up eight tackles, with six tackles for a loss of 27-yards. The Sidney Center, N.Y. native also had a pair of sacks at critical times to help clinch the game.
Brynell Middleton was selected as the Brockport Athlete of the week for his role in Saturday's win. The senior snagged two impressive interceptions in the final five minutes of the contest when the Bombers offense was knocking on the door. The senior also added three tackles and one pass break up in the contest.
The Golden Eagles had another form of recognition following Saturday's results, as senior Tarik Bennet broke a Brockport record. Bennett, who amassed 1.5 sacks in the contest, bypassed 2015 Hall of Fame inductee Michael Condello to become the all-time leader in career quarterback sacks with 24.5.
Cortland enters the week with a 4-1 league mark to lead the pack, with their one loss coming at the hands of Buffalo State on Oct. 10.  The Red Dragons bounced back last week with a 20-14 win over Alfred University. Cortland who was ranked in the top 25 polls earlier in the season, is still receiving votes for the poll.
While Cortland leads the series, the Golden Eagles have won the two most recent meetings between the two schools. In 2014, the Green and Gold beat the Red Dragons in the second week of the season with the help of a
Tyler Perna 19-yard field goal to give the Golden Eagles a 17-14 lead with two minutes to play. With a strong defensive stand, Brockport secured the win.
This week's matchup will take place in Cortland, N.Y. with kick off set for 1 p.m. Be sure to stay up to date on all your Golden Eagle scores and awards by following @BportAthletics on Twitter and by liking the "Brockport Golden Eagles" on Facebook.
