BROCKPORT, N.Y. –The College at Brockport football team couldn't overcome their mistakes, as they fell against Alfred University on Saturday, 35-13.
Brockport (4-4., 2-4 Empire 8) got off to a typical Green and Gold start with
Dan Andrews capping off a 7-play, 89-yard drive with a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead after a good
Tyler Perna extra point.
The defensive unit's
Rashad Baker forced a Saxons fumble on the next possession, however the Golden Eagles returned the favor, as a Brockport fumble turned into points when Alfred (6-2, 4-2 Empire 8) found the back of the end zone on the first play of its drive to make the count 7-7 with 4:26 to play in the period.
Brockport worked to add three to the scoreboard to start the second quarter, when Perna nailed a 24-yard field goal to give the Golden Eagles a 10-7 edge. That lead was short lived, as Alfred followed it up with a scoring drive to take a 14-10 lead. On the succeeding kickoff, the Golden Eagles dropped the kickoff, with the Saxons able to recover. The turnover ended as points for Alfred, who picked up a rushing touchdown for the 21-10 lead with 8:07 to play.
The scoring was not done for Alfred as the Saxons added a pair of touchdown's to take a 35-10 lead with 4:19 to play in the half. The Golden Eagles got on the board before the close of the period, with another Perna field goal, this one a 36-yard kick that made the score 35-13 at the break.
The Brockport defense came out big in the second half, and on Alfred's opening drive the Green and Gold defense sacked the Saxons QB, with
Ed Suriano getting credit for the sack. On the following play,
Da'Quan Brown picked off a pass in the Brockport end zone to prevent a Saxons score.
To start the fourth quarter,
Jake O'Connell halted an Alfred red-zone drive when he picked off a pass at the Brockport 12-yard line. The Golden Eagle offense struggled to produce, and the Golden Eagles would eventually fall, 35-13.
Wayne Bonsell led the offense, with 266-yards, completing 28 of 38 passes.
Jerry Thompson was his favorite target, with 10 catches for 117-yards.
Ian Gilhousen picked up six catches for 56-yards. Andrews rushed for one touchdown, with 56-yards on the ground. With that touchdown, Andrews tied the current Brockport record for rushing touchdowns with 37 in his career.
On defense,
Alex Egglinger continued to lead the Golden Eagles with 13 total tackles, including two for a loss of three-yards.
Julius Mizro added 10 tackles with
Chris Hercules picking up nine.
Brockport will wrap up its home season on Nov. 7 when they host Morrisville State College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
