Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Connor Melanophy stole the show with a game-winning goal under the lights Tuesday night as The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team won a non-conference matchup against Houghton College 2-0 on Bob Boozer Field.
Brockport (7-2-2) defeated Houghton in a tightly contested game in which both teams energy levels high. Net minder Casey Sullivan had a standout night, stopping seven shots for his seventh shutout on the season.
Melanophy put Brockport on the board in the 29th minute of action when he stole the ball deep in the Highlanders territory and raced around a defender before sending a shot far post to beat the goalkeeper for the Golden Eagle 1-0 lead. The goal was Melanophy's first career score for Brockport, as the sophomore midfielder improved his season point total to five.
Brockport struck gold yet again in the 58th minute of play. The Golden Eagles were awarded a free kick from a little more than 30 yards away and sent Collin Goettel for a shot, and he put the ball on net. Houghton's keeper had had a difficult time catching the ball, as the explosive shot ricocheted off his hands and to the head of Mark Sylvia. Sylvia finished the ball in the goal, netting his second score of the season which put the Golden Eagles ahead by two scores.
The Green and Gold were outshot collectively on the game 15-14 but held the advantage of shots on net with eight total. Sullivan improved his school record on career shutouts with his 24th clean sheet.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday with a road, State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game against Geneseo.
