Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Outside hitters Kayla Barber and Sam Holdredge both had exceptional match against Nazareth in a straight set sweep in which the second game needed extra time on Wednesday evening.
Brockport (17-1) utilized the highly effective duo of Barber and Holdredge to win its seventh straight match. Barber totaled 16 kills as Holdredge added 15 with both Golden Eagles committing only two attacking errors apiece.
In the first set of play, the Green and Gold trailed midway through the action when Aimee Spilman entered the lineup. The score was 15-13 and the Golden Flyers were serving the ball. The next point was keyed by a dig from Spilman as she sent the ball perfectly to setter Noelle Poloncarz who then assisted Barber's kill with a perfect pass.
The Golden Eagles rallied to take the lead 16-15 before trading leads four more times. Brockport won the first set 25-22 on a kill from Holdredge.
During the second set, Brockport held a commanding 16-10 lead but the Golden Flyers refused to bow out of the contest easily as the team rallied and actually held the 25-24 lead. Nazareth had the chance to win the second set but Poloncarz and Holdredge combined for the set and spike to knot the match up. Barber closed the set out with two consecutive kills on assists from Poloncarz.
Behind a couple of kills from Jamie Schlesinger the Golden Eagles took a commanding 8-2 lead but the Golden Flyers refused to go away, proving to be a worthy opponent. Nazareth tied the score 18-18 late in the set, before a Rachel Fiser service ace helped settle the match and get the Green and Gold back on track. The Golden Eagles went on a 7-1 run at the end of the third and final set to win 25-18 and take home the overall victory.
Poloncarz put the Brockport offense in great position to attack the ball all night as she led the team with 42 assists. Brianna Richardson had a nearly perfect game leading the team in offensive efficiency. Richardson totaled eight kills in 14 attempts with a hitting percentage of .500.
On the defensive side, Kathleen Irwin led the team with 19 digs while Holdredge added 10. Spilman added six digs off the bench. Richardson led the team with three block assists while Holdredge chipped in two.
Brockkport travels to Potsdam this weekend for State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool-play. Matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday against Geneseo on Friday at 5 p.m before a 10 a.m. match against Potsdam on Saturday and concluded with a 12:30 p.m. match against Fredonia.
