Brockport Late Comeback Bid Falls Short At Buffalo State, falling 35-28

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team was outmatched in their regular season finale, the I-90 bowl at Buffalo State, 35-28.

The Golden Eagles fall to 5-5 on the season and 3-5 in the Empire 8 while the Bengals move to 7-3, 5-3 in league play.

The Brockport fought to gain the first lead of the game after both teams traded possessions throughout the first period. Sparked by a Buffalo State fumble, recovered by the Green and Gold in Bengal territory, Brockport was able to put the first points on the board.

It was a five-play drive that the Golden Eagles found the back of the end zone on, when Dan Andrews capped a 22-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run. Tyler Perna put the extra point through the uprights, and head coach Jason Mangone's squad took a 7-0 lead with eight seconds to play in the period.

The Golden Eagles saw their lead vanish, but only momentarily after a Bengals score made the count 7-7 with 7:45 to play in the second quarter.

The Greed and Gold responded less than two minutes later after a six-play, 72-yard drive ended with an Andrews pass to Ian Gilhousen for the 50-yard score, and with an extra point, a 14-7 lead.

Again the Golden Eagle lead was short lived, when on the next drive in the final seconds of the half, the Bengals knotted the contest at 14-14, a score that would stand at the midway break.

In the third quarter, Buffalo State posted two touchdowns to take their first lead of the contest, with the Golden Eagles trailing 28-14 with 1:23 to play in the period.

A Brockport drive that began in the third quarter, spilling into the fourth ended in Golden Eagle points. This time it was a Wayne Bonsell pass to Brendan Fesinger that topped off a 77-yard drive to cut the Brockport deficit to 28-21 with the made extra point.

However on the successive drive, Buffalo State would widen that gap, posting a touchdown and making the count 35-21.

Brockport wasted no time, and on their following possession worked their way into the end zone. On a first-and-15, Bonsell connected with Andrews for a nine-yard pickup, knocking on the Buffalo State door, at the Bengal 22-yard line. Bonsell linked up with Gilhousen on the next play for a 17-yard gain, giving the Golden Eagles a first-down at the Buffalo State five-yard line. Andrews did what he does best, fighting for the five-yard TD on the next play. Perna's extra point attempt was true, and the Brockport squad pulled within seven, at 35-28.

On the following Bengal drive, the Buffalo State special teams missed a 20-yard field goal attempt, giving the Golden Eagles a chance with 1:37 to play in regulation.

The Buffalo State defense had the Golden Eagles on their heels on three different occasions, when Bonsell foiled their plans, fighting for three big first downs to put Brockport at the Bengal 20-yard line. In the final play of the game, the Brockport QB was picked off, making the final score 35-28.

Bonsell threw for 184-yards and 14 completions on the day with one touchdown. Andrews led the Golden Eagles on the ground with 80-yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and one throwing TD. Jerry Thompson picked up eight catches for 114-yards, with Gilhousen adding 82-yards on three catches with a score.

On the defensive side, Egglinger led the unit with 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss. Jake O'Connell added 12 tackles with a tackle for loss of his own. Julius Mizro and Brandon Thomas each had 11 tackles, while Tarik Bennett and Chris Hercules chipped in nine a piece. Bennet also worked for two tackles for a loss of eight yards and had a forced fumble on the day.

Brockport will wait to find out their fate, as the Golden Eagles declared for an 2015 ECAC Bowl Game. Be sure to stay up to date on all your Golden Eagle scores and awards by following @BportAthletics on Twitter and by liking the "Brockport Golden Eagles" Facebook page.
