DAYTONA, Fla. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team ran into a tough No. 10 ranked John Carroll University team on Tuesday, falling 115-94.
The Golden Eagles picked up only their second loss of the year, moving to 5-2 on the young season. The undefeated Blue Streaks kept their record unblemished, improving to 10-0.
Head coach
Greg Dunne's squad kept pace with JCU through the opening minutes of play, despite a proving to be a strong offensive opponent. A
Hamed Shamseldin trey made the count 10-5 with 17:48 in the first half.
Pierre Ismael connected on a deep ball, bringing the Golden Eagles within two with 14:17 to play, at 14-12. On the following possession
Cordell Torres weaved through the lane, drawing the foul and converted at the charity stripe for the old-fashioned three-point play, cutting the JCU lead to just one at 16-15 with 13:05 remaining in the half.
After an
Olusola Adeniran lay-in at the 8:42 mark, the Blue Streaks embarked on a 13-4 run down to the 4:51 mark to post a 42-26 lead. The Golden Eagles struggled to keep pace with the high firing JCU offense, and despite buckets from
Levi Pace,
Clifton Lyerly and
David Clark down the stretch, found themselves trailing 54-33 at the half.
Adeniran led the Golden Eagle efforts at the break with six points and 10 rebounds. Shamseldin and Lyerly each added five points at the break. In the second half of action, Brockport set out to chip away at the JCU lead, but the sharp shooting Blue Streaks never allowed the Golden Eagles to get closer than 18 points.
The Green and Gold unit worked out a 9-2 run, featuring three buckets from the floor and a pair of free throws from
Devonn Gavin, cutting the Brockport deficit to 66-45 at the 15:53 mark. A layup from
Marcus Blythers two minutes later brought the count to 72-54, the closest the Golden Eagles would strike in the half.
The Blue Streaks, who shot 50.0 percent from three-point range in the contest, continued to hit key shots, stifling any Golden Eagle comebacks. After Brockport saw the JCU lead swell to 35, the Golden Eagles answered with a 10-0 run. The scoring surge featured a
Josh Nelson three, a Blythers jumper and a pair of scores from Gavin to make the final count 115-94.
Gavin led the Brockport offensive efforts, notching 22 points to go with three rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Shamseldin netted 17 points and dished out two assists in the outing, with Lyerly hitting double digits with 10 points and two steals.
