Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport bypasses No. 10 St. John Fisher, 67-50

ROCHESTER, NY. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team posted a convincing 67-50 win over No. 10 ranked St. John Fisher College on Friday in the second round of the Wendy's College Classic.

The Golden Eagles improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Cardinals fall to a record of 3-2.

Head coach Greg Dunne's squad came out firing, with three layups on as many offensive possessions, with two from Clifton Lyerly and one at the hands of Matthew Smith to post a early 6-2 lead just two minutes into the contest.

Brockport's high offensive production continued, as Ryan McCarthy knocked down a trey at the nine-minute mark to lift the Golden Eagles, 14-9. Hamed Shamseldin added his own deep ball on the next offensive possession. After the Golden Eagles forced a Cardinal turnover, a Lyerly free throw gave Brockport their largest lead, at 18-11, with 6:51 to play.

After a slew of Fisher free throws etched the Golden Eagle lead down to just two, the Green and Gold offense exploded out to a double digit lead, helped in large part to back-to-back three's from Mitch Cote and Marcus Blythers that gave Brockport a 30-19 lead with just over a minute to play in the half.

A pair of free throws from McCarthy and a Lyerly jumper to close the half gave Brockport a 32-19 lead heading into the break.

Lyerly led all scorers at the midway point with 11 points, adding five rebounds and three steals. Shamseldin and McCarthy each netted five points toward the Golden Eagles' totals, while as a squad, Brockport posted 38.7 percent shooting from the field.

The charity stripe played a large role in the second half for the Golden Eagles, as they made 13 trips to the line. A 14-2 Brockport run, all points scored from the free throw line aside from one Lyerly lay-in, helped the Golden Eagles out to their largest lead of the night with 11:25 to play at 54-30.

Brockport worked to hold off any Cardinal charges, and after a 14-4 Fisher run down to the 4:35 mark, the Golden Eagles still held strong to a 66-49 lead. The Green and Gold squad held on to post a strong 67-50 win.

The Golden Eagles outmatched their opponents in several categories, including second chance points (24-9), bench points (19-14) and points off turnovers (24-9). Brockport fired 34.6 percent from the field in the outing, with a 70.3 percent effort from the line.

Lyerly led all scorers with 26 points, and also picked up eight rebounds and three steals. Shamseldin added 15 points to go with four rebounds and two steals, while McCarthy finished with eight points.
