Brockport's Late Run Falls Short

Women's basketball drops a 79-76 game to Fredonia

Junior Olivia Suhr (Rochester, NY/Marion) dominated the court Tuesday evening as The College at Brockport dropped a close game 79-76 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game to Fredonia on the road.

Suhr scored 34 of Brockport's points, tied for fourth all-time in school history, while the Golden Eagles were able to score 50 points in the second half. However the Blue Devils were able to score 59 points to overcome Brockport's halftime lead.

Suhr helped Brockport dominated the first half of play, helping Brockport to its 26-20 halftime lead. She scored two consecutive baskets for Brockport with less than seven minutes remaining. With Fredonia and Brockport tied at 14-14, Erin Cunningham (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro) assisted on a three pointer from Suhr. Faith Welch (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) assisted on Suhr's next basket, a layup with five minutes left in the first half. Marissa Pike (Burdett, NY/Watkins Glen) closed out the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the half with two free throws.

Suhr scored the first basket of the second half to stretch Brockport's lead to eight. The Golden Eagles and Fredonia traded baskets for the next four minutes of play. However a 15-2 run by the Blue Devils evaporated Brockport's lead. Fredonia stretched its lead to 10 points with nine minutes left in the action.

Hannah Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, NY/Sacred Heart) stopped Fredonia's run with a three pointer, followed by a layup to cut the Blue Devil's lead to 58-53. Fredonia built an eight point lead with around three minutes remaining. Welch made an open three pointer after Cunningham passed her the ball behind the arc. Cunningham made two free throws with a minute left to cut Fredonia's lead to three.

After two free throws from the Blue Devils, Suhr made a layup to once again pull the Golden Eagles within three. Lisa Yacovoni (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) grabbed an offensive rebound and passed it to Suhr who made another layup with 10 seconds remaining after a Fredonia free throw to close the gap to two points.

A couple more free throws from the Blue Devils stretched their lead to four points but Suhr again brought Brockport within two points. Fredonia made the final point of the game with a free throw to close out the scoring and cap the game off at 79-76.

Suhr scored 34 points making 15-of-28 shots from the floor. She also led the Golden Eagles with 11 rebounds and two steals. Cunningham scored a career-high 15 points for Brockport and Rehbaum added 11 points.

Brockport returns home to host Oneonta Friday at 7:30 pm and New Paltz Saturday at 4 pm.
