Box Score Junior Olivia Suhr (Rochester, NY/Marion) and sophomore Hannah Rehbaum ignited The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team to a 68-59 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory Tuesday night against Cortland in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium on the campus of Brockport.
Suhr led all scorers with 26 points and 11 rebounds while also compiling four blocked shots to help the Golden Eagles secure their first victory over Cortland since February 5, 2008, an 84-76 victory. Brockport's defense was consistently strong throughout the game. Brockport held Cortland to 35.5% shooting from the floor, including 19% from beyond the arc.
Rehbaum made several key plays to spring some life into the Golden Eagles offense. During the first half Brockport and Cortland traded leads twice. With 12 minutes remaining in the first half Brockport trailed 17-12 but two three point plays bounced the Golden Eagles ahead.
Rehbaum began the turnaround with a three point play the hard way. She drove to the basket and converted a layup while also being fouled in the process cutting the deficit to 17-15. Nearly two minutes passed with no scoring from either team until Alyssa Rusinko (Fairport, NY/Fairport) stole the ball from Cortland, brought it up court and dished it off to Marissa Pike (Burdett, NY/Watkins Glen) who made a shot from beyond the arc. Brockport took the 18-17 lead and never looked back as it held the lead for the remainder of the game.
In the second half of play, Brockport stretched its led to double digits with a layup by Suhr, and took a 12 point lead moments later with a layup from Rehbaum on an assist from Faith Welch (Albany, NY/Catholic Central). A 19-8 run by the Red Dragons over the next five minutes of play, trimmed the Golden Eagles lead to a single point, 48-47. However Rehbaum and Suhr teamed up to give Brockport a little more breathing room.
Rehbaum made two consecutive jumpers as Suhr assisted on the first. Erin Cunningham (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro) neutralized a Red Dragon score with a layup of her own with under eight minutes remaining in action. Brockport utilized four made free throws by Cunningham and Welch to close out the scoring in the last 10 seconds of play.
Rehbaum compiled 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Welch and Cunningham each totaled eight points. Welch also added eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport travels this weekend for its two remaining SUNYAC contests against Plattsburgh Friday at 7:30 pm and Potsdam Saturday at 4:00 pm.
