Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team utilized a relentless attack to defeat St. John Fisher 2-1 in its home opener Thursday night at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
After the Golden Eagles (2-1-1) and Cardinals played to a scoreless tie in the first half, Brockport was first to strike in the 62nd minute of action.
It was only fitting that Brockport captain Courtney Szczesniak was the first player to score in the game, as the senior midfielder's presence was felt all over the field. Brockport was awarded a free kick on the outer edge of the box in the second half. Ashley Makowski passed the ball to Szczesniak in the corner of the box. She struck the ball with her right foot over the Fisher defenders and into the upper portion of the net for the Brockport 1-0 lead.
About 20 minutes passed before Chelsea Stahl's speed led to another Brockport score. Stahl beat several Cardinal defenders with her foot speed before sending a drop pass to Lauren Moore. Moore quickly struck the ball over the heads of a flock of Cardinals and into the back of the net for Brockport's second goal.
The Golden Eagle defense was superb for most of the night, allowing minimal shot attempts onto State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Defensive Player of the Week Catherine Eliasson. Eliasson finished the game with two saves, but Fisher was able to net a ball when she went for a loose ball in the keeper's box and was beaten to it cutting the lead to 2-1 within the final minute of play.
The Golden Eagles travel to Nazareth College this Saturday to continue its annual Golden Challenge for a Pink Cure game at 12 p.m. Proceeds raised from ticket sales at the game are donated to the Wilmot Cancer Center.
