Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brockport's Impressive Rebounding Effort Not Enough

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team went cold from the floor, one day removed from shooting 50-percent, as they fell in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game against Fredonia 64-53 Saturday afternoon.

Brockport (7-6 Overall, 3-3 SUNYAC) fired up an incredible 77 shots on Fredonia's court, thanks in large part to crashing the boards hard and securing 17 offensive rebounds but they were only able to convert 19 of those shots for 46 points. The Golden Eagles were a perfect seven-of-seven from the free throw line and grabbed 52 rebounds collectively.

Olivia Suhr scored the first points of the game for Brockport as she snatched a miss from Hannah Rehbaum and quickly banked the ball off the glass and into the net for a 2-0 lead. Fredonia scored the next seven points until Rehbaum's right handed lay in with 7:32 left on the clock.

Following the Blue Devil's two point response Faith Welch drained a three pointer. Hannah Spencer quickly dribbled around the perimeter of the paint before sending a great kick out pass to Welch, who caught the ball in stride and fluidly sent the ball up in a single catch and release motion. The triple brought Brockport within two as it trailed 9-7 with less than seven minutes remaining.

Fredonia scored 13 of the next 20 points trying to get a 10 point lead heading into the first quarter break, but Welch nailed a big three pointer as time expired to bring Brockport within five points.

Both teams clamped down defensively in the second quarter with Fredonia outscoring Brockport 9-7. Jenna Lividini hit another last second shot from downtown to keep the Blue Devils from a double digit lead. Suhr assisted on the play as Fredonia led 31-24 at the half.

Unfortunately in the third quarter Brockport was unable to keep the Blue Devils from a 10 point deficit. The team trailed 50-39 heading into the final quarter of play. The Golden Eagles had three different players sink jumpers from beyond the arc in the quarter including Alyssa Rusinko, Welch and Lividini. Suhr also sank a couple jumpers from inside the arc.

Welch helped bring Brockport within five points with two minutes left in the fourth quarter. The junior guard converted all three free throws after getting fouled to close the gap to 56-51. However Spencer was the only Golden Eagle to score any points in the final two minutes of play.

Suhr led the team with her fifth double-double of the season as the senior forward grabbed an eye-popping 18 rebounds to go with her 10 points. Welch led the team in scoring with 14 points while Rehbaum also added an impressive 12 rebounds.

Brockport returns home January 19 for another SUNYAC game versus Oswego at 5:30 p.m. Be sure to stay up to date on all your Golden Eagle scores and awards by following @BportAthletics on Twitter and by liking the "Brockport Golden Eagles" Facebook page.
