Hot shooting Brockport downs Potsdam, 95-58

POTSDAM, N.Y. – A balanced scoring effort from the College at Brockport men's basketball team led the Golden Eagles past SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, 95-58.
 
The Golden Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season and 4-4 in SUNYAC play, while the Bears fall to 1-14 on the year and 1-7 in the league.
 
Three Golden Eagles worked their way into double figures, while 14 players posted points in the scoring column. Clifton Lyerly and Hamed Shamseldin each posted 14 points to lead the Brockport scoring efforts. Lyerly added three assists while Shamseldin picked up four rebounds. Devonn Gavin finished with 12 points, while Josh Nelson chipped in nine, shooting 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
 
The Golden Eagles shot a hot 52.3 percent (34-of-65) in the contest, with 50 percent (8-of-16) from beyond the arc. Brockport outmuscled their opponents in several other categories, winning the rebounds battle by a count of 40-25, and picked up 40 points off 28 forced turnovers.
 
The Green and Gold squad didn't let the Bears hang around for long, working out to a double digit lead after a trey from Gavin to post a 17-7 lead just seven minutes into play. A 12-2 run to close the contest only built on a strong Brockport advantage, allowing the Golden Eagles to take a 52-24 lead into the break.
 
At the half, Lyerly led the way with 14 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, to go with three assists. Shamseldin and Gavin each chipped in nine towards the Golden Eagles totals, while Levi Pace pulled down seven boards.
 
Brockport fired a hot 56.4 percent from the field in the opening half, with a scorching 55.6 percent from three-point range.  Head coach Greg Dunne's squad forced 11 first-half turnovers, which they turned into 18 points.
 
In the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to take care of business, working to only widen their already established lead. An 8-0 run down to the 15:15 mark, featuring a pair of buckets from Marcus Blythers and Matthew Smith each pushed Brockport out to a 33 point lead at 61-28.
 
The Green and Gold kept pace and their distance from the Bears, and with a final three from Nelson, put an exclamation mark on the win, finishing with their largest lead of the night, at 95-58.
 
The Golden Eagles will wrap up their road trip tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 23 when they take on Plattsburgh.
