BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball dug itself an early hole against SUNY Geneseo before giving a valiant effort to overcome the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) second place team but dropped the conference match 73-57 on Friday evening in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Brockport (10-7 Overall, 6-4 SUNYAC) and Geneseo attempted an identical 15 shots from behind the arc but the Knights made eight compared to Brockport's five. The Golden Eagles ate away lead in the third quarter but were hard pressed to overcome a 34-20 halftime deficit.
Freshman Megan Anagnostopulos was sharp from behind the arc making three of Brockport's five triples. On the day she scored a career-high 11 points, going three-of-five from downtown while sinking her only two free throws. She hit a big three pointer early in the fourth quarter to keep Brockport within striking distance as it trailed 56-44 on an assist from Olivia Suhr.
With the Golden Eagles trailing by 14 at the half, the team turned to its top two leading scorers – Suhr and Faith Welch. Suhr and Welch responded with some clutch baskets to keep a glimmer of hope for a comeback. During the second half Welch shot six-of-12 from the floor and a perfect six-of-six from the line for all of her 19 points on the game.
In the first half of play Geneseo's suffocating defense continually denied the pass down low to Suhr but the senior forward found some open looks in the second half of play shooting four-of-six, while scoring nine of her 13 points.
The Green and Gold held their own against a very sound Geneseo roster after the initial five minutes of the first quarter. Brockport was outscored by just two points after the first five minutes of play against the top defensive unit in the SUNYAC.
Also shooting well for Brockport was freshman Schyler Laux as the guard converted three of her five shots for a total of six points. Freshman Becky Rossier finished the game with a career high five blocks to go along with four points and four rebounds. Leading the Golden Eagles in rebounds was Suhr, including four offensive boards.
Brockport has a rare Saturday off tomorrow and will next touch the court on Tuesday February 2 at 5:30 p.m. in a crucial standings matchup against SUNY Cortland.
