Downtown Nelson Leads Brockport in Dominant win over New Paltz, 89-55

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – A hot shooting Brockport squad, led by Josh Nelson, blew past New Paltz on Friday in State University of New York Athletic Conference action, 89-55.
 
The Golden Eagles improved to 6-3 on the season and 1-1 in the league with the win, while the Hawks fell to 1-8 and 0-3 in the league.
 
Nelson shot a scorching 85 percent (6-of-7) from three-point range for 18 points, to help lead the Golden Eagles past New Paltz. But Nelson wasn't the only hot-hand, as Modzelewski chipped in 18 towards the Brockport totals as well, shooting 2-from-3 from beyond the arc. The senior also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Two other Golden Eagles worked their way into double digits, with Hamed Shamseldin and David Clark each finishing with 14 and 10 respectively.
 
An unselfish Brockport squad played team first offense, with 26 assists on the night. Matthew Smith dished out seven assists, while Devonn Gavin and Abdoulaye each handing out six assists a piece. The Green and Gold proved to be tough on the defensive side of the ball as well, as Brockport snagged 13 steals and forced 25 New Paltz turnovers.
 
Brockport shot an unrelenting 55.4 percent (36.65) in the game, with 10-of-23 from downtown in the win. The Golden Eagles crushed their opponents in several categories, with a 44-26 margin on the boards, 27 points off turnovers and a 48-24 point paint count.
 
Head coach Greg Dunne's squad opened the contest with a 9-1 run to pull to an early 21-4 lead. It didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to build on their lead, posting a 20-point advantage with 2:59 to play in the half after a Modzelewski three found its way home for a 42-22 advantage. Marcus Blythers put an exclamation point on the end of the half when a monster dunk gave the Green and Gold a 48-28 advantage heading into the break.
 
At the half, the hot-handed Nelson led all scorers with 12 points, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Shamseldin chipped in seven and Abdoulaye Sow dished out five assists.
 
The Golden eagles shot a sizzling 59.4 percent from the floor, and 50 percent from three-point range. Brockport held its opponents to 35.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 12 turnovers.
 
The second half continued to be a Golden Eagle showcase, as Brockport continued to grow its lead. A seven-point run to close the contest, featuring a Nelson three and buckets from Ryan McCarthy and Clark, helped the Green and Gold lead swell to its largest point at 89-49. A pair of Hawks scores to end the contest made the final count 89-55 in favor of Brockport.
 
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 9 against SUNY Oneoneta at 4 p.m.
