Golden Eagles Fall in Competitive SUNYAC Contest 65-58

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team finished out a tough weekend of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games in competitive fashion but fell to Oneonta 65-58 Saturday afternoon in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Brockport (5-5 Overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) shot exceptionally well from beyond the arc making 10 of its 23 attempts but was contained by Oneonta on the rest of the floor shooting 32% overall. Olivia Suhr and Faith Welch scored more than half of Brockport's 58 points, combining for 32.

The Golden Eagles and Red Dragons were in a constant back and forth battle within the first half as both teams went on runs to trade the lead multiple times. After a close first quarter that saw Oneonta lead the whole way going into the break, up 22-21.

Megan Anagnostopulos gave Brockport its first lead of the game hitting a three pointer just 10 seconds into the second quarter. Welch assisted on the play as the Golden Eagles took the 24-22 advantage. Two minutes ticked off the clock without any baskets as both teams defenses clamped down. Welch grew Brockport's lead to five points with a three pointer on a dish from Erin Cunningham.

However Oneonta scored the next four baskets taking a 31-27 lead with less than three minutes in the first half. Welch again came up big as she sank all three free throws after getting fouled on her shot from beyond the arc. Suhr tied the contest with a free throw of her own at the 1:37 mark and again with a layup on a pass from Welch following Oneonta's basket. With less than a minute left in the half Brockport and Oneonta were even at 33-all. However a Red Dragon three-pointer in the waning seconds gave them the lead heading into the half.

The two teams traded baskets back and forth in the third quarter as Brockport trailed 47-43 going into the final quarter of play. Becky Rossier's free throw was the first point of the fourth but Oneonta went on an 8-2 run to grow its lead. Brockport went on a run of its own with less than five minutes remaining scoring seven unanswered points to cut the lead down to two points. Brockport trailed 57-55 following Suhr's two clutch free throws with 2:02 left in the game. The Red Dragons closed out the contest with an 8-3 scoring run as the clock ran out with a score of 65-58.

Suhr led Brockport with 19 points scored and eight rebounds – four apiece offensively and defensively. Welch contributed 13 points and tied for the team lead in assists with Hannah Rehbaum as both found the open shooter three times apiece. Anaganostopulos finished the contest with three steals to go along with her six points. Alyssa Rusinko played a strong 12 minutes off the bench chipping in a big three point basket while also contributing three rebounds and an assist.
