Volleyball Secures Home Court With Two More Wins

Brockport completed another undefeated weekend on Saturday, defeating Fredonia and Potsdam to move to 27-2 overall (9-0 SUNYAC), and secure the top seed and home court advantage in the SUNYAC playoffs.

Game 1 vs. Fredonia: W, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19)
Brockport went at Fredonia with a balanced offensive attack in the opening set, as each of the six starters recorded kills. Sam Holdredge got the ball rolling, killing the first three balls for Brockport to help get them out to an early 5-2 lead. After Fredonia made a run midway through the set to take a 17-16 lead, Jamie Schlesinger took control, killing three straight balls to give the Golden Eagles a 21-18 lead that they would not relinquish. A service ace from Kathleen Irwin would seal the deal in this stanza, giving Brockport the 25-19 victory.

After Fredonia took the second set, they hopped out to an early lead again in the third, putting the pressure on Brockport. Holdredge had the answer for the Golden Eagles; with the team down 9-2, the senior killed two straight balls to bring them back within three. After trading points for a while, Brockport made their move when Kathleen Irwin came to the service line trailing 16-13. The Webster, N.Y. native served eight straight points, giving the Golden Eagles a solid 21-16 lead. Brianna Richardson sealed the deal in the second, killing two of the final three balls to give Brockport the win.

The team made easy work of the fourth set, once again controlling the game towards the end, which has become a trend for this team throughout the season. Brockport won six of the final seven points in this stanza behind Richardson and Schlesinger, who combined for five kills in that span.

The bulk of the offense came from the outside in this contest, as Holdredge and DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore combined for 35 kills. Schlesinger and Richardson were not far behind, combing for 19 kills while each hitting over .290.

Aimee Spilman continues to shine defensively, leading the squad with 20 digs. Holdredge (17) and Maddy Taylor (16) each had 15+ digs as well.

Noelle Poloncarz had another fantastic outing, recording 50 assists to go with her 12 digs and block assists. That block assist came next to Richardson, who recorded two and added a solo as well.
Game 2 vs. Potsdam: W, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21)

Brockport controlled every aspect of the game, besting the Bears in points, kills, aces, assists, and digs.

Three different players had 10+ kills, led by Kelly Waters who recorded 12. Richardson (11), and Ortiz-Whittemore (10) combined for 21. Waters kills came on just 15 attempts, giving her a .800 hitting percentage for the match.

Rachel Fiser took over the setting duties in this contest, dishing out 29 assists and adding a kill, a dig, and three service aces. Poloncarz had 10 assists as well in two sets, bringing her day's total to 60.

Schlesinger led the team defensively, digging up 17 Potsdam attacks. Spilman was not far behind, registering 16 digs.

The service game led the way for Brockport, as the team combined for 14 aces overall. Karly Oliver, and Poloncarz joined Fiser with three aces apiece, and Irwin (2), Taylor (2), and Richardson (1) all aced Potsdam passers as well.

Brockport will travel to RIT for a single matchup on Tuesday before hosting a non-conference tournament next weekend where they'll face St. John Fisher, Allegheny, and Scranton.
