Football Captures I-90 Bowl on Senior Day

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team came away with a win in their final game of the season, downing Buffalo State College 48-24 and capturing the 15th Annual I-90 Bowl Game.

The Golden Eagles finish the 2016 season with a record of 7-3 overall, the first winning season since 2013, and 6-2 in the Empire 8.  The Bengals finish at a mark of 5-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Brockport out rushed the Bengals by a tally of 162 to 72, and tabbed 536-yards of total offense to Buffalo's 408-yards.  Joe Germinerio threw for 374-yards and four touchdowns off of 23 completions.

After an early touchdown that put Buffalo State on top 7-0, the Golden Eagle offense turned it on. On the ensuing drive, it took just 3:09 to drive the ball 73-yards down the field for the score. The drive was capped off by a Dan Andrews catch and run from Germinerio, a showcase of freshman and senior stars teaming up.

After a quick three-and-out from the Bengals, the Brockport offense went back to work, this time using just two plays and 0:37 seconds to drive 62-yards down the field. Germinerio launched his second TD pass on the day, this time finding Nate Wilkinson on a 41-yard bomb for the score.

The Golden Eagle defense held strong again on the following drive, allowing one first down before stalling the Bengal offense and forcing another punt.

The offensive unit once again showed off their explosiveness, using three plays to march 71-yards down the field to put them up 21-7. Freshman phenom Germinerio threw his third TD pass of the quarter, finding Ian Gilhousen for all 71-yards.

Buffalo State was able to march down the field to start the second quarter for a 12-play, 69-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes. The Brockport defense once again stepped up, with Sean McKean and Justin Resseguie teaming up for a stop at the two-yard line, and Jake O'Connell making a goal-line stop, to keep Buffalo State out of the end zone and forcing a field goal which closed the gap to 21-10.

Brockport notched their fourth straight touchdown on the opening possession of the second quarter, this time taking their time to march 94-yards down the field. The nine-play drive was capped off by Wilkinson's second touchdown catch of the afternoon, this time a seven-yard hookup for Germinerio's fourth TD pass of the half.

The remainder of the half was a defensive standoff until the Bengals were able to notch a touchdown with 1:22 remaining in the half and complete the two-point conversion, making the halftime score 28-18 Brockport.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Buffalo blocked a punt and recovered it at inside the five-yard line.  After a penalty, the Bengals faced first-and-goal from the 15-yard line.  Jake O'Connell intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 27-yards.

Buffalo State regained possession less than one minute later, but O'Connell had other plans for the Bengal offense.  The sophomore intercepted another pass, this time at Brockport's 38-yard line.

Facing second-and-10 at midfield, Germinerio connected with Nick Gomez for an 18-yard gain.  Three plays later, Germinerio found Gomez again, this time for a gain of 23-yards to reach the Bengal three-yard line.  Andrews took it from there, finding the end zone with a one-yard run to extend Brockport's lead to 35-18.

The Bengals drove down the field to score a touchdown of their own on the ensuing drive.  Austin Dean blocked the extra point attempt to hold the Bengals to six points.

Joseph Ortiz returned the kickoff 33-yards to reach Brockport's 41-yard line.  On the next play, Germinerio handed the ball off to Andrews, who tossed it back to Germinerio, and found Gilhousen down field for a 53-yard gain on a perfectly executed flea flicker.  The Golden Eagles took a 41-24 lead to the final frame.

The Brockport defense stood tall yet again, forcing a turnover on downs and a punt on the Bengals' first two possessions of the fourth quarter.  Senior Ed Suriano sacked the Bengal twice for a combined loss of 15-yards.

With five minutes remaining, Germinerio ran for a 15-yard gain to advance Brockport to their own 35-yard line.  Andrews took it from there, finding a hole and taking it 62-yards to the house, and sealing the 48-24 win.

Gilhousen finished with 124-yards off of 2 catches for one score.  Wilkinson reached 75-yards off six receptions for two scores.  James Rupp anchored the defense with 10 tackles, including eight solo.  Alex Egglinger and Suriano each tabbed six tackles on the day including three solo.  O'Connell finished with seven tackles and two interceptions, his first multi-interception game of his career and now leads the team with five interceptions this season.

Rochester native Dan Andrews finished with 139-yards rushing for three touchdowns off of 20 carries.  The senior capped off his career as the all-time leading rusher in Brockport football history with 4,932-yards, and career rushing touchdowns with 63.  Andrews is also the first Golden Eagle to eclipse 400 career points, reaching 422 points with his four scores today.
