Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Johnson’s double-double not enough, in 69-58 Brockport loss to Bridgewater

SALEM, Va. – In the 2016 Susan Dunagan Classic hosted by Roanoke College, The College at Brockport women's basketball team fell in the opening round on Thursday against Bridgewater College, 69-58.

The Golden Eagles move to 2-8 on the season while the Eagles improve to 6-4 on the year.

Despite a strong second half, where the Green and Gold outscored their counterparts 33-26, Brockport was unable to overcome a 43-25 first half deficit. In the opening frame, Lindsay Johnson provided the majority of the Golden Eagle offense, turning in 10 points.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles came out determined, working to cut the Bridgewater lead, and behind a 13-4 run, pulled within nine. The run was sparked by back-to-back buckets from Hannah Rehbaum and a Johnson layup. After Brianna Neeley scored her first basket of the night, Emily Nestler converted at the free throw line for two. A Faith Welch and-one brought the count to 47-38 with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Rehbaum scored the Golden Eagles final six points of the period, with two buckets in the lane and a pair of free throws to take a 53-44 deficit and building momentum into the final period of play.

In the final quarter, the play evened out, with both teams going tick-for-tack down the stretch. The Green and Gold were strong from the charity stripe, taking advantage of every opportunity at the line, connecting on every attempt in the fourth quarter. Olivia LeBaron knocked down a trey to end the contest, making the final count 69-58.

Johnson led the Gold and Green efforts notching a double-double, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Rehbaum wasn't far off, chipping in 13 points and seven boards to go with two assists. Welch added nine with five rebounds and four assists with LeBaron adding eight points.

Brockport shot 33.3 percent from the field in the contest, while holding Bridgewater to 31.8 percent. The Golden Eagles also forced nine Eagle turnovers, which they used for 10 points.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Dec. 30 in the final game of the Susan Dunagan Classic, as they take on the hosts, Roanoke College at 1:30 p.m.
