Brockport Powers Past Potsdam, 95-59

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Behind a 20-point performance from Devonn Gavin and forcing 32 turnovers, The College at Brockport men's basketball team posted a big 95-59 win on Friday over SUNY Potsdam.
 
The Golden Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season and keep an untarnished record in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at 3-0, while the Bears fall to 1-6 on the year and have a 0-3 mark in conference action.
 
It was a team effort to bring home the win, with 16 different Golden Eagles seeing action, and 13 getting into the scoring column. Gavin led the way with 20 points and four assists, while Clifton Lyerly and Marcus Blythers each hit double digits. Lyerly added 13 points with four assists, while Blythers netted 10 and six rebounds.
 
After some back-and-forth action Brockport took control, riding a 14-0 run down to the 10:01 mark to post a 20-7 lead. The Green and Gold caught fire behind the line, with four straight threes from four different Golden Eagles, including Matthew Smith, Dwanye Daniel, Cordell Torres and Gavin for the 32-13 edge with five minutes to play.
 
The Green and Gold closed the half with a 13-3 run to post a 45-18 lead heading into the break. At the midway point, Gavin and Lyerly led all scorers with nine points each. Brockport also forced 23 Bear turnovers, and shot a hot 45.4 percent from beyond the arc.
 
In the second half, the Golden Eagles keep their strong hold on the contest, extending their lead to the largest of the contest behind a 20-1 run to post a 69-27 advantage by the 14:01 mark.
 
The Green and Gold continued to control the contest, and finished strong, just missing the century mark, securing the 95-59 win.
 
Brockport picked up 35 points off turnovers and knocked down 18 fast break points on the day. The Green and Gold outpaced Potsdam in the paint by a margin of 42-32 and used a 57-point lift from the bench. As a team, Brockport shot a hot 48.1 percent from the field while converting on 12 three-point attempts.
 
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Dec. 10 when they continue their SUNYAC road trip with a stop at SUNY Plattsburgh, with tip off set for 2 pm.
