ONEONTA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team struggled in the fourth quarter after holding a lead for much of the game, dropping a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on the road to Oneonta 47-42 Friday evening.
Brockport (12-9 Overall, 8-6 SUNYAC) held Oneonta to a lower shooting percentage of 25.9-percent compared to its 32-percent. However 19 Golden Eagle turnovers plagued the team from taking a road win from the Red Dragons who currently rank second in SUNYAC standings.
Oneonta won the tip off but were forced into a missed shot to start the game with freshman Hannah Spencer grabbing the rebound. She then assisted on a Faith Welch jumper to give Brockport the 2-0 lead. Olivia Suhr put the Green and Gold up by four on its next possession following a Schyler Laux defensive rebound.
Suhr blocked Oneonta's next shot sending it off a Red Dragon and out of bounds. Laux and Suhr then combined to put Brockport up 6-0, as Suhr scored her second of six baskets on the day. The Golden Eagles outscored Oneonta 14-7 in the first quarter.
A closer second quarter brought the Golden Eagle lead down to five points, with the score 24-19. Suhr was impressive scoring eight points on four-of-six shooting with an incredible four blocks. Spencer was four-for-four from the free throw line.
Brockport's lead fell to two points with 7:30 left in the third quarter but the Golden Eagles quickly responded when Laux hit a jumper. A Spencer free throw preceded a Suhr three pointer and layup which put the team up a game-high 10 points. Oneonta fought back pulling within six points by the end of the third quarter.
The Golden Eagles were outscored 15-4 in the fourth quarter with the Red Dragons overtaking the lead with less than four minutes remaining. A three pointer at 3:52 put Oneonta ahead 42-40 before Erin Cunningham made a layup to tie things back up. Brockport was unable to score in the final three minutes of play, falling to the Red Dragons 47-42.
Suhr finished the game with 13 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. She also led the Green and Gold with five blocks. Cunningham added eight points and nine rebounds. Megan Anagnostopulos was also three-of-five from the floor with seven points scored.
