Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport downs New Paltz, 84-70

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team shot their highest percentage of the season to help continued their winning streak at New Paltz on Saturday, taking down the Hawks 84-70.

The Golden Eagles improve to 15-7 on the year and are now 10-5 in league play while the Hawks fall to 4-18 on the season and are 3-13 in SUNYAC action.

Clifton Lyerly led all scorers with 24 points and picked up 13 rebounds for the double-double. Devonn Gavin added 15 points with two assists and two steals, while Levi Pace finished with 14 points. Matthew Smith worked into double figures, scoring 10 points, while Olusola Adeniran and Patrick Modzelewski eached netted seven and six points respectively.

Brockport shot a season high 55.7 percent (34-of-61) from the field in route to the win. The Green and Gold outmatched New Paltz in several categories on the night, including a 62-22 advantage in the paint and forced 16 Hawks turnovers, which they turned in for 15 points.

It took the opening ten minutes of play for the Golden Eagles to get their offense churning, when the Green and Gold took their first lead of the contest after a Modzelewski layup made the count 16-15.  The Brockport lead was short lived however as New Paltz regained the advantage on a deep three on the following possesion.

Brockport worked to erase the New Paltz lead, and by the 6:50 mark, a Pace bucket gave the Golden Eagles a 26-25 edge.  The Golden Eagles worked to keep their distance, and with strong play in the lane paired with success at the free throw line, the Green and Gold held on to their slim advantage.

After the Hawks used a three to gain a momentary lead, Gavin answered with his own trey, and gave the Golden Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. Brockport used a 9-1 run to close the half, and post a 43-36 advantage at the break.

Midway through the contest Lyerly led all scorers with 11 points. Gavin chipped in nine with Pace adding eight towards the Green and Gold totals. The Golden Eagles continued their hot shooting with a scorching 56.3 percent in the opening period.

In the second half, a spirited New Paltz team came out to score seven straight points and tie the contest at 43-43. The Golden Eagles had the answer in the form of a seven point run of their own, with Lyerly scoring seven straight from the field and the charity stripe to post a 50-43 lead with 15:34 to play.

The run of sevens continued, as the Golden Eagles were able to work out to their first double digit lead after a pair of scores from Gavin, a Cordell Torres bucket and an Adeniran free throw made the count 69-58 with just over seven minutes to play.

After the Green and Gold posted the double-digit advantage, they were able to continue building on their lead, and by the 1:04 mark a pair of Adeniran free throws gave the Golden Eagles their largest gap of the game at 84-65. A pair of New Paltz scores to close the contest were too little too late, as Brockport wrapped up an 84-70 win.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up their road stretch on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at SUNY Cortland.
