CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team had several strong performances including one from senior Olivia Suhr who put the Green and Gold ahead late in the game before Cortland emerged with a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory, outscoring the Golden Eagles 74-67 Wednesday evening.
Brockport (12-11 Overall, 8-8 SUNYAC) shared the ball at great efficiency dishing out a team total of 23 assists but the Green and Gold were unable to overcome the 23 times it sent a Red Dragon to the free throw line. The Golden Eagles went to the charity stripe only four times in comparison.
Entering the fourth quarter Brockport trailed 59-53 but mounted a comeback swapping leads with Cortland for the eighth time in the game by outscoring the Red Dragons 14-7 in the first seven minutes of play in the final quarter.
Hannah Spencer got things started for Brockport in the fourth with a shot from beyond the arc on an assist from Suhr. Suhr helped keep things close with her third of four blocks in the game before Schyler Laux hit a jumper on an assist from Spencer. Laux's jumper cut the Red Dragon lead to four with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Cortland answered back seconds later to push its lead back up to six before Erin Cunningham's second chance bucket cut things back down to four. The Red Dragons made a layup following a turnover with about five minutes to play retaking a six point advantage.
With time running down on the shot clock Megan Anagnostopulos made a pass to guard Faith Welch who put up a desperation shot that cut Cortland's lead down to 66-63 with 4:44 left to go. Laux made another jumper nearly a minute later this time getting assisted by Suhr bringing Brockport within one.
The Golden Eagles took the lead on its next possession when Anagnostopulos picked the Red Dragons pocket. Laux returned the favor to Suhr by setting her up with the go ahead bucket. Brockport held a 67-66 advantage with 3:19 to go in the final quarter. However the Green and Gold went scoreless in the remaining time falling to the Red Dragons 74-67.
In the opening quarter Brockport took the largest lead of the game, working its way to a 17-6 lead. Suhr was almost unstoppable at the start of the game quickly putting the Golden Eagles ahead. She scored on all three of Brockport's possessions to begin the contest. After missing for the first time on Brockport's fourth possession, Suhr set up the next basket hooking up with Laux who hit a jumper from the wing.
Laux assisted on the next possession which Suhr converted a layup in the paint. Spencer hit a big three pointer to stretch the Golden Eagle lead to seven. Spencer was the next teammate to assist on a Suhr basket which put Brockport ahead 15-6. Spencer followed the possession with another assist, finding Cunningham for an open jumper.
The Red Dragons finished the quarter on a 12-0 run taking the lead on a last second shot. Brockport and Cortland traded leads several times in the second before the Red Dragons went on a 12-4 run, seemingly taking control of the contest. However Brockport showed resiliency mounting a fourth quarter comeback, battling back from a 10 point deficit at one point in the third frame.
Suhr finished the game with 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting, also leading the team with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Also putting together a strong effort were freshmen Spencer and Laux. Both freshmen guards shot at a highly effective rate combining for 23 points on nine-of-14 shooting from the floor. Individually Spencer tallied 14 points including four-of-six from beyond the arc. Cunningham also added 10 rebounds including an impressive five offensive boards.
Brockport returns home for its final two regular season games as it battles for the final SUNYAC playoff spot remaining. The Golden Eagles play Plattsburgh on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a crucial matchup as both teams are vying for the sixth and final postseason spot. On Saturday Brockport hosts Potsdam at 2 p.m. which will be preceded by senior day celebrations.
