BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In an exciting contest that came down to the wire, The No. 3 seed College at Brockport men's basketball team rang victorious over the No. 6 seeded Buffalo State, 82-78.
The Golden Eagles improve to 17-9 on the year while the Bengals likely end their 2015-2016 campaign with a 15-11 mark.
Hamed Shamseldin was the Golden Eagles go-to down the stretch, as the sophomore finished with a team high 24 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Olusola Adeniran netted 13 points with eight boards.
Clifton Lyerly added 11 points, with seven rebounds and seven assists while
Devonn Gavin worked into double digits with 10 points.
Levi Pace chipped in nine with
Marcus Blythers adding six points and six rebounds.
Brockport shot a consistent 44.6 percent (29-of-65) in the contest, needing only two three's to bypass the Bengals. The Green and Gold outworked their opponents in the paint, picking up 44 points to Buff State's 40. The Golden Eagles also used a huge effort from their reserves, with 49 bench points to their counterparts six.
While the game was closely contested throughout, the second half proved to be a thriller. After taking a slim 38-36 lead into the break, the Golden Eagles came out of the half to push their lead to 40-36 after an Adeniran layup.
Over the next five minutes, each team would take their turn with the lead, while the Golden Eagles saw their deficit reach five with 14:31 to play. The Green and Gold used an 8-2 run, with a pair of scores from Lyerly, and buckets from Blythers, and Pace to regain the lead at 55-53 with 12:27 remaining.
Brockprot struggled to shake the Bengals, and saw three ties and three lead changes down to the 5:04 mark. A Lyerly lay-in and Adeniran free throw put the Green and Gold in the positive, with a count of 70-67. By the two-minute mark, an energetic Adeniran put-back dunk sparked the Golden Eagles and gave them a 75-68 lead.
All the Golden Eagles had to do was hold on down the stretch, as they sealed the deal at the free throw line, securing the 82-78 win and moving on in the post season stretch.
The Golden Eagles will continue their season in the SUNYAC Tournament Semi-Finals against the No. 2 SUNY Cortland on Friday, Feb. 26 at the No. 1 seed Plattsburgh. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Plattsburg, N.Y.
