BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team opened their 2016 season at home on Sunday against Alfred University, falling by a margin of 10-6.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 to start the season while the Saxons move to 2-0 in 2016.
After four straight Saxons goals, the Golden Eagles got on the board in the final minute of the first period when
Marcus Palvino found the back of the net to post a 4-1 score at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second, the Green and Gold saw Alfred net a pair of goals, before the Golden Eagles used a man-up opportunity to set up
John Countryman for the score, and pull within 6-2.
In the second half, the Brockport offense was more consistent, with
Liam Cannon opening the half with a goal off a
Brendan Fitzgerald set up to pull within three at 6-3. A slow period saw only one more goal, with the Saxons working in a shot for the 7-3 lead.
Alfred opened the final quarter with a goal, but the Brockport offense got things going with three straight scores. Countryman and Cannon each netted their second goal of the day, with
Mark Robinson burying a close range shot to cut the deficit to just two, at 8-6. Brockport's run was cut short however, as Alfred worked in a pair of goals in the final 30 seconds of play to make the final count 10-6.
Brockport outshot their opponents, firing off 43 attempts, with 22 on goal, to Alfred's 19 shots on goal. The Golden Eagles went 17-for-21 in clears, while picking up 31 ground balls as a team.
Jake Giudice and Cannon led the way with four caused turnovers apiece, while
Colin Blind had three.
Zach Cook, who went 14-for-19 in faceoff's, also picked up 10 ground balls on the day.
Steven Gurin scooped up three ground balls, with
Jake Giudice,
Nick Smith,
Pat Quinlivan,
Michael Gallagher, Robinson and Palvino each grabbing two ground balls each.
Conor Nowak stood tall in goal for the Golden Eagles for all 60 minutes of play, picking up nine saves in the outing.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on March 5 when they head to Potsdam, N.Y. to take on Clarkson.
