Softball Wins in Extras; Sweeps Day Two in Florida

FORT MYERS, FLA. – The College at Brockport softball team improved to 3-1 on the season after sweeping day two of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.  The Golden Eagles downed Northland College 10-3 to start the day then beat University of Saint Joseph's in extra innings to cap off a 2-0 day.
 
Game One
 
Brockport quickly found itself in a 1-0 deficit as Northland scored one run in the top of the first inning.  In the bottom of the second, Tabitha McBride led off with a double to right center and would eventually score on a throwing error from the Northland shortstop.
 
A scoreless third kept the score knotted at one entering the fourth inning.  Northland tabbed two runs in the top of the frame to jump out to a 3-1 lead but Brockport responded with five runs in the bottom half to take the lead.
 
Morgan Flamholtz led off the inning with a triple through the right side and scored on a double from Amanda YuhasLindsay Wachna drove in two runs with a triple to right field.  Kathleen Laskey took advantage of a passed ball to score a run and Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion scored on a sacrifice bunt from Stephanie Scala.
 
Pitcher Dana Fink retired three straight batters in the top of the fifth.  Delaney Buckley led off the bottom of the inning with a double and would eventually score to give Brockport a 7-3 lead after five innings.
 
In the top of the sixth, Nortland had two runners on base with one out but Fink dug in to strike out the next batter and force a pop up to end the threat.
 
Laskey scored again in the bottom of the sixth to extend Brockport's lead to 8-3.  Brianna Harris drove in Taylor Parlet and would score on a single from Mikelle Deck to cap off the 10 run game.
 
Fink earned her first win of the season after striking out two and giving up three hits and zero runs over 3.2 innings pitched.  Kelsi Nau pitched the first 3.1 innings and struck out six while giving up three runs.
 
Game Two
 
The Golden Eagles scored three quick runs thanks to a two-run home run from Lindsay WachnaDelaney Buckley also drove in one run with a double to right field.  The University of Saint Joseph responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to knot the game at three.
 
Amanda Yuhas took advantage of a wild pitch in the top of the second to score a run and give Brockport a 4-3 lead.  Paige Monachino scored on a single up the middle from Brianna Harris.  Korely Kibling struck out the first two batters and forced the third to groundout to preserve Brockport's two run lead.
 
The Blue Jays earned one run in the bottom of the third but responded back with one in the top of the fourth.  Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion reached on a bunt single and would advance to third on a groundout and wild pitch.  A bunt single from Taylor Parlet scored Vivlamore Zion.  Kilbing was untouchable in the bottom half of the frame, striking out one and forcing two groundouts.
 
Brianna Harris drove in one run with a single in the fifth but Saint Joseph scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh to force extra innings.
 
The Brockport offense exploded for four hits in the top of the eighth to jump out to a 11-7 lead.  With the bases loaded, Karleigh Eaton dug in and ripped a double to left center to clear the bases.  Eaton would then scored on a single from Mikelle Deck.
 
The Blue Jays would score one run in the eighth but it wasn't enough as Brockport pulled out its second win of the day.
 
Kibling improved to 1-1 on the season after striking out six in 7.0 innings pitched.
 
The Golden Eagles will face Salem State University at 9 a.m. then Suffolk University at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the North Collier Regional Park in Naples, Fla.
