NAPLES, FLA. – The College at Brockport softball team beat Salem State University 8-1 to start day three of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Naples, Fla. but then fell to Suffolk University 7-1. The Golden Eagles move to 4-2 on the season.
Game One: Brockport 8 – Salem State University 1 Jaime Berger pitched another gem in her second win of the season, going the distance and striking out nine along the way. Berger also contributed at the plate, going three-for-four with one run batted in.
After two quick outs to start the second inning, Brockport dug in to score two runs.
Amanda Yuhas doubled to center and advanced to third on a single from
Shelby Perry. A single from Berger scored Yuhas, and Perry would score on a wild pitch to give Brockport a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Linsday Wachna ripped a double down the left field line in the third to score
Karleigh Eaton.
Tabitha McBride kept the momentum going with a home run over the right centerfield fence to put Brockport up 5-0.
The Vikings scored one in the fourth but the Golden Eagles tabbed one run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Perry that scored
Taylor Parlet.
Brockport added its final two runs in the sixth on a double down the left field line from Wachna that scored
Delaney Buckley and
Mikelle Deck.
Berger held Salem to six hits and allowed five walks. The Vikings had a runner on second with zero outs in the fifth but Berger struck out the side to end the threat.
Wachna finished game one four-for-four at the plate with three doubles, three runs driven in and one run scored herself. Perry and Yuhas each tabbed two hits.
Game Two: Brockport 1 – Suffolk University 7 The Golden Eagles were first to get on the board against Suffolk. Eaton singled up the middle and advanced to third on a double from
Delaney Buckley. Wachna grounded into a double play but Eaton was able to score to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 after one inning.
A scoreless second kept the score in Brockport's favor but one run in the third and six in the fourth would put Suffolk ahead 7-1. The Golden Eagle offense was unable to get anything started, recording just two hits in the final four innings of the game.
Kelsi Nau suffered her first loss of the season after giving up three runs in the first 3.1 innings and striking out three.
Dana Fink came in in the fourth and gave up three additional runs. Berger closed out the final 3.2 innings of the game and allowed one run while striking out six.
The Golden Eagles will face University of Minnesota Morris at 9 a.m. then the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Century Link Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
