Brockport Wins Battle Over Wisconsin-Superior; Downs Minnesota Morris

FORT MYERS, FLA. – The College at Brockport softball team downed University of Minnesota Morris 9-3 then won a battle against University of Wisconsin-Superior, 2-0, to improve to 6-2 and sweep day four of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Century Link Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
 
Game One: Brockport 9 - University of Minnesota Morris 3
 
Korey Kilbing went the distance to earn her second win of the season on the mound.  The senior struck out six and gave up seven hits.
 
Brianna Harris singled to left center to lead off the bottom of the first inning and advanced to third on a bunt by Mikelle DeckDelaney Buckley then flied out in foul territory but Harris would tag up and score to put Brockport up 1-0 early.
 
Kibling would keep the bases empty in the top of the second, forcing one batter to ground out and striking out the next two.
 
Karleigh Eaton drew a walk to start the bottom half of the frame.  A double down the left field line from Tabitha McBride would advance Eaton to third.  Eaton then scored on a sacrifice fly from Shelby Perry.

Minnesota Morris would score two runs in the top of the third off of a bases loaded double with one out.  A grounder back to Kibling would get the runner out at first, then Lindsay Wachna threw a rocket back to catcher Eaton to get the runner out at home to end the inning.
 
Brockport scored two runs off of two hits in the bottom of the third.  Buckley scored on a bloop single from Eaton and Perry drew a bases loaded walk to score Wachna and make the score 4-2 after three innings of play.
 
Kibling struck out two in the fourth and Eaton threw out a runner at second attempting a steal to keep the score at 4-2.
 
The Golden Eagles bats exploded for five hits in the fourth to score four runs.  Harris singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a bunt single from Deck.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Eaton dug in and ripped a double to left field to score both runners.  McBride then singled to score Eaton and would score on a single from Perry to extend Brockport's lead to 8-3.
 
The Cougars got one back in the sixth but a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Kline would score Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion for Brockport's final run of the game.
 
Perry, Eaton, McBride and Harris each finished with two hits in game one.  Eaton and Perry drove in three runs each.
 
Game Two: Brockport 2  – University of Wisconsin Superior 0
 
Jaime Berger pitched her second complete game shutout of the season to down University of Wisconsin-Superior 2-0.  Berger allowed only three hits while striking out seven.
 
The Golden Eagles got on the board early as Harris drew a walk and would score on a single from Wachna.
 
The Yellow Jackets drew a walk to start the bottom of the first but Eaton made another strong throw to get the runner out attempting to steal second base.  A pop out and a strike out would end the inning.
 
Wachna led off the fourth inning with a blast over the right field fence to put Brockport up 2-0 for her second home run of the season.
 
Wisconsin-Superior threatened in the bottom of the fifth with runners on second and third with only one out.  A pop up to Wachna at first and a fly out to Harris in left field would end the inning.
 
Brockport had two impressive defensive plays in the bottom of the sixth.  With zero outs and runners on first and second, the Yellow Jackets bunted.  Buckley darted in to pick up the ball and threw to shortstop McBride, who was covering third base, to get the runner out.  Wisconsin attempted the play again but Buckley and McBride connected to make the two outs look easy.
 
Kibling retired three straight batters in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the 2-0 win and limit the Yellow Jackets to three hits in the game.  Wachna led the Brockport offense in game two, going two-for-three with two runs batted in.
 
The Golden Eagles will face Augsburg College at 1 p.m. followed by Curry College at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Century Link Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
