Offense Explodes for 28 Runs in Softball Sweep

FORT MYERS, FLA. – The College at Brockport softball team had a spark in their offense Tuesday as they tallied 28 runs on the day off of 23 hits.  The Golden Eagles improved to 8-2 on the season after beating Augsburg College 12-4 in five innings, then winning a marathon of a game over Curry College by a score of 16-14.

Game One: Brockport 12 – Augsburg College 4 (five innings)

The Golden Eagles scored at least one run in each frame of the game.  To get things started in the top of the first Mikelle Deck ripped a double down the left field line.  Delaney Buckley drove Deck home with a single to left field.

Augsburg responded with one run in the bottom of the frame but Brockport would get it back in the second as Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion drew a walk to start the inning, then stole second and darted around the bases to score as the throw to tag her out rolled into the outfield.

Three runs for Auggies in the bottom of the second would put them ahead 4-2 but Brockport would score 10 unanswered runs to take the win.

In the third, Lindsay Wachna led off with a single to left field and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly from Tabitha McBride.  The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the fourth off of a double steal and a wild pitch to regain the lead.

Brockport scored its final seven runs in the fifth off of only three hits.  Wachna led off the inning with her third home run of the season over the left field fence.  With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Shelby Perry knocked a double to left field to score both runners.  Buckley also ripped a two run double to put Brockport ahead six runs.  A wild pitch and a double steal would seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.

Wachna was a perfect three-for-three at the plate in game one, bringing in one run and scoring one herself.  Jaime Berger pitched all five innings in her fourth win of the season.  Berger struck out six while allowing five hits and five walks.

Game Two: Brockport 16  – Curry College 14

Brockport jumped out to a 4-1 after three innings, then found themselves in a five run deficit.  The Golden Eagles scored 10 runs off of eight hits in the fifth en route to the 16-14 win.

With zero outs and two runners on, Buckley hit a RBI single to give Brockport its first of many runs.  Shannon Allen scored on a groundout and Buckley scored on a sacrifice bunt from Karleigh Eaton to put Brockport ahead 3-0.

Curry scored one in the second but Brockport got it back quickly as Paige Monachino reached on fielders choice.  Curry attempted to get the force out at second, but a throwing error allowed Morgan Flamholtz to not only be safe, but score on the play.

Five runs for Curry in the fourth put them ahead by two but Brockport responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.  With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Brianna Harris sent the ball down the right field line to score both runners and knot the game at six.

Curry would jump out to an 11-6 lead in the top of the fifth but Brockport's offense exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the frame.  Eaton drove in Buckley with a single through the left side.  A single down the right field line from Taylor Parlet would score Stephanie Scala.  Back-to-back doubles from Flamholtz and Paige Monachino would score three more runs for Brockport.  Monachino would eventually score as Harris reached first on a fielding error by the second basemen.

Brockport tabbed two more runs off of a wild pitch and a double from Buckley.  With one runner on, Wachna hit her second home run of the day to cap off the 10 run inning.

A scoreless sixth would keep the score at 16-11 in Brockport's favor.  Curry threatened in the seventh after scoring three runs and bringing the winning run to the plate.  With two outs and runner on first and second, a grounder to third base was scooped up by Buckley who stepped on third for the final out of the game.

Buckley finished three-for-four at the plate in game two with two runs driven in and three scored herself.  Harris, Wachna and Monachino each drove in three runs.

Berger earned her second win of the day to improve to 5-0 on the season.  Berger struck out three in 2.2 innings.  Korey Kibling pitched the first four innings, striking out two and allowing six hits.  Kelsi Nau pitched 0.1 innings and allowed two hits.
