PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team dropped a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference games Friday afternoon to Plattsburgh State. The comeback fell short in a tight game two after dropping game one. The Golden Eagles fall to 12-10 on the season and 0-6 in the SUNYAC.
Game One: Brockport 11, Plattsburgh 3 (five innings)
The Golden Eagles were first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Mikelle Deck singled through the left side and advanced to third two batters later thanks to a single from Korey Kibling. With two runners on and two outs, Delaney Buckley singled to left field to drive in the first run of the game. However, the Cardinals would respond with seven runs in the bottom of the frame off of six hits to take a 7-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Lindsay Wachna drove in two runs with a double to right center field to cut the deficit to five runs. The Cardinals came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cap off the mercy-rule shortened five-inning contest.
In game one, Buckley finished two-for-three at the plate with one run scored and one run batted in. Harris, Wachna, Deck, Karleigh Eaton and Shelby Perry each tabbed one hit.
On the mound, Kibling suffered her fifth loss of the season after giving up seven runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Kibling struck out four and walked three. Kelsi Nau pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one run and two hits. Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion pitched the final 0.2 innings, allowing three runs off of four hits.
Game Two: Brockport 2, Plattsburgh 3
Jaime Berger pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinals had two runners in scoring position with one out but a fly out and ground out would end the inning. A tight defensive game didn't see a run until the bottom of the third when the Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles tied it up in the top of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Amanda Yuhas drew a walk to knot the game at one.
Plattsburgh scored another run in the bottom of the frame to take a one run lead. The go-ahead run reached third base with two outs, but Berger dug in and struck out the batter to end the threat.
With two outs and the tying run 60 feet away, Wachna ripped a single to third base to knot the game at two. The Golden Eagles would then load the bases but a groundout would end the inning.
The Cardinals would end the game with a walk off in the bottom of the seventh. A walk and three straight singles would give Plattsburgh the win.
Karleigh Eaton finished game two two-for-two at the plate. Buckley and Wachna each went two-for-four while Perry tabbed one hit. Berger went the distance in her fourth loss of the season. Berger allowed six hits and three runs while striking out seven in 6.1 innings.
The Golden Eagles will head to Potsdam Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon. Brockport will return home Monday for their home opener against D'Youville College.
