Softball Wins First SUNYAC Game of Season; Splits with Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball downed SUNY Potsdam 10-6 in convincing fashion, then dropped game two 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning in a State University of New York Athletic Conference double header Saturday in Potsdam.  The Golden Eagles move to 13-11 on the season, and 1-7 in conference play.

Game One: Brockport 10, Potsdam 6

Brockport's bats lit up in game one, out hitting the Bears 14-10.  The Golden Eagles got the scoring started in the top of the first with a double steal, and would score three more in the top of the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Amanda Yuhas knocked a double down the left field line, and would advance to third on a single to right field from Taylor ParletPaige Monachino would drive in Yuhas with a single to left field.  Two straight walks, and a fielding error by the third basemen would score two more for the Green and Gold.

Potsdam would get three back in the second, and tie the game in the bottom of the fourth but five hits in the fifth would tab four runs for the Eagles.  With no outs and a runner in scoring position, Morgan Flamholtz singled to left center to bring in the runner.  Two straight singles from Yuhas and Parlet would bring Flamholtz home.  An error by the shortstop would load the bases with one out.  Brianna Harris drove in Felicia Urbanczyk with a single up the middle, and Parlet scored on an infield ground out to put Brockport ahead 8-4.

The Bears tabbed one run in the bottom of the fifth but one run in the sixth, and another in the seventh would seal the win for the Golden Eagles.  Lindsay Wachna took advantage of a wild pitch in the sixth while Monachino scored on a ground out in the seventh.

Wachna and Yuhas each finished game one three-for-four at the plate with one run scored.  Harris, Parlet and Monachino each had two hits.  Berger went the distance in her eighth win of the season.  The senior struck out six while allowing 10 hits and seven walks.

Game Two: Brockport 1, Potsdam 2

A strong defensive game two only saw nine hits between the two teams.  The Bears struck first with one run in the bottom of the second off of a double.  Brockport was able to get runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth inning, but were unable to take advantage of the scoring opportunities.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Amanda Yuhas doubled to left center.  Pinch runner Shannon Allen advanced to third on a ground out, and would be driven in by Monachino with a single to right field to tie the game at one.  The Golden Eagles would then have two runners on with two outs, but a fly out would end the inning.

A lead off walk, sacrifice bunt, and intentional walk in the bottom of the seventh would put two runners on with one out for the Bears.  A single up the middle would score the base runner and hand Brockport the 2-1 loss.

Harris, Flamholtz, Yuhas, Parlet, Monachino and Korey Kilbing each tabbed one hit in game two.  Kibling pitched a complete game for her sixth loss of the season.  The senior struck out one and allowed three hits.

The Golden Eagles will host D'Youville College in its home opener Monday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.  Brockport will then host University of Rochester on Wednesday, followed by two SUNYAC matchups this weekend in New Paltz on Friday and Oneonta on Saturday.
