Brockport staves off Rochester for sweep

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team picked up a strong pair of non-conference wins on Wednesday when they downed the University of Rochester in back-to-back contests.

The Golden Eagles improve to 15-13 on the year while the Yellow Jackets fall to 17-19 in 2016.

Game One – Brockport 4, University of Rochester 1

Brockport saw Rochester start the scoring when they worked in a run in the top of the second inning.

The Golden Eagle bats got going in the fourth frame, when Karleigh Eaton picked up an RBI to start the Golden Eagle scoring, sending home Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion. Paige Monachino kept the hits coming, as she worked in Taylor Parlet as the Green and Gold took their first lead of the contest at 2-1.

Head coach John Dumaw's squad worked to add a pair of runs in the bottom of the next inning, starting when Shannon Allen worked her way home on a fielding error in center field. On the next at bat, the Green and Gold took advantage of another Rochester error, as Stephanie Scala worked home for the 4-1 advantage. The Golden Eagle defense held strong, securing the win with a final score of 4-1.

Jamie Berger went the distance in the contest, throwing all seven innings with five strikeouts in route to the win.

Paige Monachino led the Brockport offense, going three-for-four at the plate.

Game Two – Brockport 9, Rochester 6

In the second game, Brockport saw the Yellow Jackets take advantage of an error when they put two runs on the board in the second inning. In the following frame, Rochester added another run to post a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles went to work, looking to erase the deficit. In the bottom of the third, Paige Monachino got the scoring started with a single down the left field line that brought home Tabitha McBride. Delaney Buckley connected with the first pitch in her at-bat, stroking one over the centerfield fence for three RBIs and the 4-3 lead.

In the fourth inning, Brockport saw their counterparts regain the lead after tacking on two runs, but the Rochester lead was short lived as a big bottom of the fourth for the Golden Eagles put the Green and Gold back on top.

McBride got things going when a single to second scored Vivlamore Zion. Kathleen Laskey kept things moving with a single to first that scored Scala. Paige Monachino worked in a run on a fielder's choice, with Delaney Buckley driving in the final two runs with a shot down the left field line that brought home Monachino and Laskey. After adding five in the inning, the Golden Eagles held tight to the 9-5 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Golden Eagles saw the Yellow Jackets tack on one final run, but the defense held off a charging Rochester team for the 9-6 victory.

Korey Kibling was strong in the circle for the Golden Eagles, throwing a complete seven innings while striking out two.

Three Golden Eagles accounted for two hits apiece in the contest, with Buckley Perry and McBride each tallying a pair. Buckley led the RBI charge with five on the day.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 22 when they host State University of New York Athletic Conference foes New Paltz.
