Brockport splits with New Paltz

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team split with State University of New York Athletic Association rivals SUNY New Paltz on Friday.

The Golden Eagles move to 16-14 on the year and 2-8 in league play while the Hawks are now 14-13 and have a 5-5 mark in SUNYAC play.

Game One: Brockport 10, New Paltz 4

In the first contest, the Golden Eagles worked in to a jam and saw the Hawks post a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Brockport deficit was short live however as the Golden Eagles used a big second inning to pull ahead. The rain didn't slow the Green and Gold, which came down hard in the inning. Linday Wachna got things started when she knocked a solo shot over the center field fence to even the count at 1-1. Taylor Parlet, Brianna Harris and Amanda Yuhas worked to load the bases and with a Kathleen Laskey single to short, were able to bring home Yuhas for the 2-1 lead.

The Golden Eagle scoring continued, when Paige Monachino was hit by a pitch, sending home Harris. On the next at bat Korey Kibling sent a shot up the middle, to score Parlet and post a 4-1 lead. Brockport tacked on the final two runs of the frame on a Delaney Buckley sacrifice that sent home Monachino and Laskey.

After the Green and Gold saw New Paltz add two runs in the fourth, the Golden Eagles worked to add a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth when Yuhas singled to right center to score Wachna.

A busy sixth inning ensued, with the Hawks adding a run in the top of the frame to make the count 7-4. In the bottom of the inning, the Golden Eagles worked to add three runs, with a Buckley double down the left field line starting things off when she scored Monachino. Harris kept things going with a single up the middle to send home Shannon Allen. A walk for Parlet scored the final run as the Golden Eagles wrapped up the 10-4 win.

Yuhas led the offensive efforts going three-for-three at the plate, while Buckley accounted for three RBIs in the game.

Jamie Berger went the distance, throwing all seven innings in route to the win. She struck out five batters.

Game Two: New Paltz 9, Brockport 1

In the second game, the Golden Eagle offense was slow to get moving. Brockport saw the Hawks post six runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and tacked on a pair in the top of the sixth for a 9-0 lead.

Brockport worked in their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth when a Yuhas single worked Wachna around and a fielding error by a Hawks outfielder scored the Green and Gold run. The rally was cut short as Brockport fell, 9-1.

Yuhas led the Brockport offense in the game going two-for-two at the plate, and a perfect five-of-five on the day.

Kelsi Nau got the start, and in three and one third innings struck out two Hawks. Berger came in to relieve, and picked up two strikeouts in one and two thirds innings. Wachna closed the contest, throwing a full inning, striking out one.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 23 when they host SUNY Oneonta in a double header, with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. Saturday will also serve as the Hometown Heroes event, where both the baseball and softball teams will honor veterans and service men and women of the community during the games.
