Berger Tosses No Hitter; Softball Splits with Oneonta

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Jaime Berger pitched her fourth career no hitter, leading The College at Brockport softball team to a 4-0 victory in a double header split with State University of New York Oneonta Saturday afternoon.  Brockport moves to 17-15 on the season and 3-9 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference while the Red Dragons move to 20-13 overall and 9-5 in the SUNYAC.  The Golden Eagles hosted its first annual "Hometown Heroes" weekend and honored all service men and women that served the United States in the military, fire or police departments in the Rochester community.

Game One: Brockport 4, Oneonta 0

Berger dominated the plate, striking out 13 Red Dragons en route to her fourth career no-no.  The senior allowed seven base runners all game, and only allowed two runners to reach third base.

The Red Dragons were quick to get runners on second and third with one out in the top of the first, but Berger dug in and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.  In the top of the third, a walk and an error would but two runners in scoring position with no outs but Berger went to work, fielding a groundout on her own then striking out two to end the inning.

Brockport would get on the board with four runs in the third inning.  A single up the middle from Taylor Parlet and two walks from Mikelle Deck and Brianna Harris would load the bases with two outs for Delaney Buckley.  The senior cleared the bases with a triple to right field to give Brockport a 3-0 lead.  Lindsay Wachna then drove in Buckley and reached first on an error to extend Brockport's lead to 4-0.

Berger took it from there, striking out eight batters in the final four innings of play.  All three outs in the fifth inning were strikeouts, two of which were caught looking.  Berger went the distance in her 11th win of the season, allowing zero hits and four walks while striking out 13.

Tabitha McBride led the Golden Eagles with two hits in game one while Buckley, Monachino and Parlet each had one.

Game Two: Brockport 2, Oneonta 9

The Golden Eagles allowed one run in the top of the first inning but got it back in the bottom of the second when Wachna scored from second base on a wild pitch.  The Red Dragons went on to score three runs in the third and two in the fourth to jump out to a 6-1 lead.

Smart base running by the Golden Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the fourth.  With one out, Shannon Allen was on first and Amanda Yuhas on third.  Allen stole second and a throwing error by the catcher sent the ball into centerfield, allowing Yuhas to cross the plate.

Oneonta tabbed one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to hand Brockport the loss.  Berger suffered her fifth loss of the season after going 3.1 innings and allowing six runs off of eight hits and two walks.  Wachna pitched the final 3.2 innings, striking out two and allowing three runs off of four hits.  Yuhas went two-for-two at the plate while Buckley and Kathleen Laskey each went one-for-three.

The Golden Eagles have three conference doubleheaders next week, all at home.  On Tuesday, Geneseo comes to town with first pitch set for 3 p.m.  On Friday, Brockport hosts Fredonia at 3 p.m. then Buffalo State on Saturday at noon.  The Golden Eagles will honor their seniors in between games on Saturday.
