OSWEGO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team picked up a big road win on Saturday, downing SUNY Oswego in State University of New York Athletic Conference play, 12-4.
The Golden Eagles improve to 11-2 on the year and 4-1 in league play while the Lakers fall to 5-8 on the season and 1-3 in conference action.
Brockport went straight to work, scoring a pair of goals to open play, with
Jake Giudice and
John Countryman working to give Brockport the early 2-0 edge. After Oswego worked in a goal, Giudice made sure the Green and Gold had the final say of the period when he netted a
Marcus Palvino set up for the 3-1 lead at the end of the first.
Palvino got in on the scoring to start the second quarter, burying a
Brendan Fitzgerald pass for the 4-1 lead. The Lakers pushed in a second score, but the Golden Eagles dominated the remainder of the half with three straight scores.
Nick Smith worked in a goal at 8:02, with Countryman netting the hat trick to close the half and take a 7-2 lead into the break.
Head coach
Ben Wineburg's team came out strong in the second half, with the defense holding Oswego scoreless in the third period. Giudice netted the lone goal of the quarter working to an 8-2 lead.
In the fourth, the Brockport offense posted three straight scores to build on their lead. Palvino, Guidce and
Colton Oliver all found the back of the cage for the 11-2 advantage. The Green and Gold traded scores with Oswego, when Cook netted his third goal of the year to post a 12-3 lead. The Green and Gold saw Oswego score one more, but held on for the 12-4 win.
The Golden Eagles led the way in several categories, including shots (42-27) and ground balls (29-25). The Green and Gold went 22-of-25 on clears and forced 19 Oswego turnovers.
A host of Golden Eagles provided tough defense, with Smith, Colid Blind,
Austin Recor and
Steven Gurin each accounting for two caused turnovers. Smith, Gurin and
Pat Quinlivan led the ground ball battle with four apiece.
Cook and
Liam Cannon scooped up three, with Blind, Recor and
Kevin Klaiber each adding two GBs.
Conor Nowak picked up all 60 minutes of play in the win, and grabbed nine saves on the day.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the field on April 30 when they host Potsdam. April 30 will also serve as senior day for the Golden Eagles, with the senior members of the Brockport squad set to be honored in a ceremony held prior to opening face off.
