Brockport Blasts Four Homers; Splits with Fredonia

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Golden Eagle bats were on fire Friday afternoon, knocking in four home runs in game two of a doubleheader against Fredonia.  The College at Brockport softball team took game one 6-2, but fell in a back-and-forth game two 10-9.  Brockport moves to 18-18 on the season and 4-12 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.

Game One: Brockport 6, Fredonia 2

Strong pitching from both sides wouldn't allow a run until the third inning when Fredonia jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  Brockport would tab one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take the win.

The Golden Eagles tabbed four hits in the fourth inning.  With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Mikelle Deck singled through the left side to score Shannon Allen and put Brockport on the board.

In the fifth inning, Delaney Buckley stepped up to the plate with one out and runners on first and second.  A hard hit single up the middle would score Morgan Flamholtz to knot the game at two.  Tabitha McBride then lined out to the second basemen but a throwing error to first base to attempt to double up the base runner would allow Kathleen Laskey to score.

Brianna Harris drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning and would score on a single through the left side from Amanda Yuhas.  A bunt single from Karleigh Eaton would load the bases with one out for Flamholtz.  The freshman drove the ball to right center field to bring in two runs to put Brockport ahead 6-2.

Jaime Berger went the distance in her 12th win of the season.  The senior struck out five and allowed two runs off of five hits and six walks.  Berger worked herself out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning, forcing a pop up to leave all three runners stranded.

Flamholtz finished game one three-for-four at the plate with two runs batted in and one scored herself.  Buckley, Harris and Eaton each finished with two hits while Yuhas, Perry and Deck each recorded one hit.

Game Two: Brockport 9, Fredonia 10

The Blue Devils were quick to get on the board with a lead off home run in the first inning.  The Golden Eagles answered back with two homers of their home in the bottom of the frame.  A two-run homer from Flamholtz and a solo shot from Buckley would put Brockport ahead 3-1 thru one.

The Brockport bats stayed lit in the second inning with Laskey hitting a solo shot to extend the Brockport lead.

Fredonia would score five runs in the third to take a 6-4 lead.  The Golden Eagles cooled down in the middle frames but responded with three runs in the fifth to regain a 7-6 lead.  With runners on first and second, and no outs, Lindsay Wachna ripped a single up the middle to score Cheyenne Vivlamore Zion

In a bizarre play, the Golden Eagles scored two runs off of a Buckley single.  The senior hit the ball up the middle and the base runners advanced to second and third.  The pitcher cut off the throw home and attempted to throw out Buckley rounding second but made a throwing error.  With no Blue Devil backing up the throw, heads up base running allowed Flamholtz and Wachna to score while Buckley advanced to third.

A scoreless sixth inning kept the score 7-6 in Brockport's favor but five hits for Fredonia allowed four runs to score in the top of the seventh to jump out to a 10-7 lead.

Brockport put on their rally caps in the bottom of the seventh and saw some life as Wachna reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop.  Buckley stepped up and hit her second home run of the game to make the score 10-9.  Harris kept the rally going with a grounder through the right side but a ground out double play and a hard line out would end the rally.

Korey Kibling pitched the first 2.1 innings, striking out two and allowing six runs.  Wachna pitched 1.2 innings, not allowing a run.  Kelsi Nau pitched the final three, striking out one and allowed four runs off of eight hits.  Nau suffered her fourth loss of the season.

Eaton finished game two a perfect three-for-three at the plate while Flamholtz and Buckley finished three-for-four.  Wachna finished two-for-four while Yuhas, Harris and Laskey each tabbed one hit.

On the day, Flamholtz went six-for-eight with four runs batted in, three scored herself, one home run and zero strikeouts.  Buckley finished five-for-eight with five runs batted in and two home runs.  Eaton finished five-for-seven.

The Golden Eagles home season finale is Saturday with a doubleheader against Buffalo State at noon.  Brockport's eight seniors will be honored in between games.
