OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 9 ranked College at Brockport women's lacrosse team faced off against a tough SUNY Oswego squad in State University of New York Athletic Association play on Saturday, just missing, 13-12.
The Golden Eagles move to 13-2 on the year and 6-2 in league play while the Lakers improve to 11-3 and 6-2 in conference action.
Brockport's final game of the regular season proved to be a battle, as each team went tick for tack. The Green and Gold saw Oswego push out to a 4-0 lead to start the contest, but the goals only spurred the Brockport offense, which netted six straight to the 11:04 mark for the 6-4 lead.
Hannah Cullen got things going with an unassisted goal, followed by a pair of
Hailey Boronczyk scores. Cullen again found the back of the cage at the 12:34 mark, with
Jessica Boddery and
Makensie Schuber each working in goals for the 6-4 edge.
The scoring was far from over, when after a pair of Laker goals, Schuber buried a Boronczyk pass to regain the lead at 7-6 with 7:15 remaining in the half. The two teams traded scores to close the opening period, with the Golden Eagles working in the final say of the half when Boddery found the back of the cage with less than a minute remaining to take an 8-7 advantage into the break.
Brockport saw the Lakers work in three goals to start the second half, but matched them with three straight scores of their own. Cullen again worked in a goal, this time off a
Taylor Thomas set up, followed by a pair of Schuber scores for the narrow 11-10 edge with 12:19 left in the contest.
The Green and Gold lost their lead with just over seven minutes to play when a pair of Oswego goals had the Golden Eagles trailing 12-11. Boddery worked in the equalizer less than 30 seconds later, but an Oswego goal with under two minutes to play proved too much, as Brockport fell 13-12.
Brockport outmatched their opponents in several categories, including shots (31-27) and draws (16-11).
The Green and Gold defensive unit was led by
Kelly Wall and
Lauren Mancini who each accounted for two caused turnovers.
Katie Curran picked up five ground balls, with Mancini adding three GB's. Schuber won five draws on the day, with Curran and
Cassandra Minerd each adding three.
Sara Shaddock saw all 60 minutes of action, with nine saves in the contest.
The Golden Eagles earn the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Playoffs, which comes with a first round bye. Brockport will be back in action at the No. 1 seed SUNY Cortland where they will play the winner of the No. 3 Geneseo and No. 6 Oneonta matchup on April 6 at 4 p.m.
