Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brockport draws 1-1 against Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – In the final game of the Cialella Soccer Classic on Sunday, The College at Brockport men's soccer team battled Rutgers University at Camden to a 1-1 draw.

The Golden Eagles move to 0-3-1 on the year while the Scarlet Raptors have a record of 2-0-2.

The match was an evenly contested one, as Brockport worked for 14 shots in the contest while holding Rutgers to just 10 shots on goal. David LaPietra led the way with five shots, while Quintin Volpe notched four shots in the contest.

The game remained scoreless through the opening 30 minutes of play, until the Raptors worked in a shot in the 30th minute for the 1-0 advantage.

The Brockport defense stepped up, and blanked their opponents through the remainder of the contest. LaPietra broke the Green and Gold scoring silence at the 59 minute mark, when he controlled a loose ball inside the box, and put it away near the left post to knot the contest at 1-1.

The Brockport defense stepped up, and held the Rutgers attack at bay through the remainder of regulation, and through two overtime periods. However, the Golden Eagle offense couldn't find the back of the net, as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

"It was a great team effort today," said head coach Gary LaPietra. "Our defense played outstanding, with Justin Mercer, Chris Aherne, Connor Melanophy and Mark Sylvia all playing a role. David LaPietra scored an awesome goal to tie up the game, and it was really an all around outstanding effort against a quality opponent."

The Golden Eagles net minder, Ryan Cassidy, saw all 110 minutes of action and picked up six saves on the day.

Mercer and LaPietra were named to the Cialella All-Tournament team, while the Green and Gold finished the Classic in third.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sept. 14 when they open their home season against St. John Fisher College at 7 pm in Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
