BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's soccer team secured their first win of the 2016 campaign on Wednesday, downing St. John Fisher College 2-0.
The Golden Eagles improve to 1-3-1 while the Cardinals fall to 1-4-1 on the season.
The Green and Gold got on the board early when
Quintin Volpe broke away from the pack to bury the Golden Eagles first score and give Brockport a 1-0 advantage at 5:30 into play. The Golden Eagle defense worked to hold off the Cardinals, and controlled possession throughout the rest of the half, taking the 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles scored in the opening 10 minutes, this time when
Cameron Beale set up a cross from the left side that
Justin Mercer finished into the lower right corner of the goal for the 2-0 lead. The Brockport defense stood tall, and held the Cardinals scoreless as they claimed the 2-0 win.
Brockport outshot their opponents by a margin of 20-6, with eight shots on goal. The Golden Eagles also worked for five corner kicks, while only allowing one Fisher corner.
Ryan Cassidy got the start and the win in his first shutout of the season, making one save on the day.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sept. 17 when they travel to Medaille College, with kickoff slated for 7 pm.
